The worm is called “Sapphire” or “SQL Slammer." This well designed worm quickly and easily replicates itself as its traverses the Internet, completely knocking out service for some users.

So far, the hardest hit country has been South Korea. Virtually its entire Internet service, including it wireless mobile network, is at a complete standstill.

“It is so good at replicating that it generates massive amounts of traffic that will slow down networks,” Hypponen said. “The end user never sees it. They only experience the slowdown on the Net.”

Although South Korea seems to be the hardest hit, this worm has affected the entire globe. Service in the United States, Europe, and Japan has been attacked, but not nearly to the same scale.
