DDoS Attack Continues - Hits Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft
September 27, 2010

The ongoing DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks are ongoing, this time anonymous has targeted the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) website. Almost nine days after the initial attacks battered conventional targets like the MPAA & RIAA, gears were shifted to ACS:Law and Davenport Lyons. The attacks continue with a grizzly scene of website failures and data breaches.

Operation Payback has done much to disrupt several international websites, however, it's also exposed security issues and web server mismanagement an epic scale. In the case of ACS:Law, an entire database of emails was left exposed on their web server - while the Copyright Alliance web server continues to be left wide open with a continuous stream of uploaded folder designed to make the site appear as a "0 day" warez site.

Currently, the attack on AFACT hasn't taken the site offline, but we've notice a steady decline in responsiveness. The attack began at 3PM EST, and is scheduled to last 12 hours from an untold number of participants.

The ongoing attacks represent an ideological war between two very different philosophies. The best the rest of the world can do is learn from the mistakes exposed: 1) don't keep a backup of your website on your server (or any personal information), 2) monitor your website for intrusions (something the Copyright Alliance seems to have overlooked).

We'll update this story as more news comes in.

Update: AFACT.org.au has been successfully taken offline. The DDoS attack is scheduled to last at least another 8.5 hour at the time of this writting.
