Cornered! - 2,177 New BitTorrent Lawsuits

Did you know that 2,177 new BitTorrent lawsuits were filed late last month? We're not talking about the rash of new Gay porn oriented lawsuits - we're talking about the US Copyright Group (USCG) and the oddball movies they're attempting to defend. This time, a new movie and production company is thrown into the mix - the 2009 Steve Guttenberg classic "
Cornered!". The production company is a Belgian outfit called
MAZEfilms.
The latest
USCG lawsuit was filed on August 30 in Washington DC. Much like their predecessors, these lawsuits are designed to create an alternative cash flow for producers who feel that piracy is damaging their bottom line. However, with a 4.3/10 rating on IMDB, we suspect other reasons may be to blame.
According to the complaint, data was collected from May 7 - August 25, meaning the USCG and its agents are still very active in collecting IP addresses. The IP address is the cornerstone of their campaign. Once they have an IP address and time stamp, they can then file "John Doe" lawsuits in an attempt to acquire the identities of the alleged file-sharers. It is then up to the court to grant discovery - or approve the issuance of subpoenas to the ISPs of the alleged copyright infringers.
So far, each justice overseeing these cases has approved discovery, so we suspect little different for this case.
