Vuze Makes Some Big Moves, Comcast and the FCC Too
April 7, 2010

Vuze, the BitTorrent client formerly known as Azureus, has a massive update available for its open source client. Its nemesis, Comcast, has something to celebrate today as well.
Vuze: First up...Vuze has a new version out, and while there's much that improves the workability of the BitTorrent protocol the real eye catcher is the apps! The latest Vuze has tons of extra new features that make this BitTorrent client a one stop destination for almost all media needs.
The new Vuze sports an improved HD video player, a DVD burner, anti-virus software, and improved search. The drag and drop video feature is a much heralded improvement over previous iterations; it enables video import to the "iPhone, iPod, Xbox, PS3, PSP, and Tivo" and now playability on the "iPad and Connected TVs (with DLNA support)." About the DVD burner - Vuze refers to data DVD burning as "crude", and it's unfortunate that this valuable option was neglected. Most modern DVD players accept AVI files these days and creating data files is a quick and effortless way to transport media. Hopefully we'll see it in next version.
Comcast and the FCC: You'll remember the Comcast/BitTorrent feud from 2008 - where enormous public pressure forced the ISP giant to quit its BitTorrent blocking ways. Although we doubt that Comcast will return to this type of management, the DC Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that the FCC didn't have the legal authority to force the ISP to alter its network management.
"Because the Commission has failed to tie its assertion of ancillary authority over Comcast’s Internet service to any “statutorily mandated responsibility,” Am. Library, 406 F.3d at 692, we grant the petition for review and vacate the Order."
