MiniNova's 6 Billion

If MiniNova had to provide a torrent file for every person on Earth, they'd come darn close. Earlier today, MiniNova, one of the largest BitTorrent indexers, broke past the 6 billionth torrent download milestone as it continues its march upward. Although MiniNova has only been around for 3+ years, the total number of torrent downloads have been piling up at an impressive rate.

Consider the time line for each billionth torrent file downloaded:

Six billion: 9/24/2008
Five billion: 5/28/2008
Four billion: 2/18/2008
Three billion: 11/1/2007
Two billion: 6/13/2007
One billion: 1/8/2007

Now let's take a look at how long it's taken for each billionth download to occur. Keep in mind that MiniNova went online in January of 2005:

0-1 billion: 2 years.
1-2 billion: 5 months, 5 days
2-3 billion: 4 months, 18 days
3-4 billion: 2 months, 17 days
4-5 billion: 3 months, 13 days
5-6 billion: 3 months, 26 days

While many MiniNova and BitTorrent fans would like to see exponential growth from their favorite site, it seems MiniNova is settling in at 1 billion torrent downloads every 3-4 months. That's still an impressive growth rate, and faster than iTunes' per-billion download rate.

Niek, the administrator of MiniNova, informed Slyck after publication the reason for the apparent slowdown is due to the way MiniNova now collects statistics. About two months ago, MiniNova became more discriminating in their calculations, and told Slyck.com "we now only count 1 download per IP address per 24 hours."

Yet don't expect to see MiniNova's accomplishments splashed in the media as readily as iTunes. As for the 7 billionth download, we should see that sometime around Christmas.
