Buckcherry Slams BitTorrent Leak

Depending on the artist, entertainment leaks have either been lambasted or welcomed with open arms. Big budget movie prereleases typically prompt involvement from the FBI or other high level law enforcement, and most people clearly remember the repercussions felt by EliteTorrent in May of 2005. Hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake with movies, leaving little room for tolerance by producers and directors.

Music album leaks are as ancient as file-sharing itself. Higher profile leaks, such as the long awaited Axl Rose project “Chinese Democracy”, have speckled the P2P news headlines since the days of Napster. Today, BuckCherry discovered the song “Too Drunk…” from their upcoming album “Black Butterfly” has appeared on a number of BitTorrent sites – nearly 2 full months prior to its September 15 release date.

Buckcherry, it appears, joins the litany of artists that have expressed anything from mild displeasure to absolute rage over the prerelease of their work. Their reaction to this development falls somewhere in the middle.

"Honestly, we hate it when this s*** happens, because we want our FANS to have any new songs first," Buckcherry stated. In reaction to the leak, Buckcherry quickly created a “down and dirty” video for the song, which is available on their homepage.

Hate is a strong word to describe the occurrence of a prereleased movie or album leak, yet the digital revolution has evoked strong emotions from all sides of the debate. While digital technology has hastened the decline of the increasingly obsolete CD, evidence that P2P damages overall sales remains weak. It’s a natural reaction for someone to share their favorite artist’s work online if they so happened to obtain a prerelease – if they aren’t sharing, perhaps that’s what the artist truly should be worried about.
