It doesn't take much effort to notice that most young computer owners who are interested in music have a ready avenue in place to fulfill their harmonious needs. LimeWire has become one of the most popular methods in sharing and obtaining all kinds of different music, as its ease of use and trendy profile make it a favorite among file-sharers.
Putting a number on LimeWire's popularity, P2P firms Digital Music News and Big Champagne
got together and found that nearly 36.4% of all computers had this popular P2P program installed. That's an increase of about 2.3% from last year. The study took a bit of a hard stance on that increase, and referred to it as "modest". Could such a small increase be a result of fierce copyright enforcement and recent legal setbacks?
Probably not. The fact there was an increase in market share for LimeWire is an encouraging sign for any P2P enterprise. Over the last several years, many P2P market studies have shown a modest or declining interest or population. However this seemingly stark outlook for file-sharing has been readily countered by an ever expanding increase in bandwidth consumption. Led by mega-networks like BitTorrent and eDonkey2000, these slightly less numerically popular file-sharing networks help keep any chanting of victory of P2P honest.
It's likely true those lawsuits are having a noticeable impact on file-sharing. Whether they are curtailing P2P usage is part of a highly contentious debate, however many will agree their more immediate impact is to encourage individuals to remain silent about their file-sharing habits.
