What's worse than going on your favorite newsgroup indexing site, downloading the hottest NZB file, then downloading the index file only to get an error message on your nifty usenet client? An expired newsgroup post can be infuriating, however Giganews might just have the answer.
In announcement
made today, Giganews unveiled their new service which will gradually increase their retention of binary newsgroup postings to 200 days. This is by far the longest retention - or time an article is stored on a news server - of any newsgroup provider.
"This recent push to 200 days retention fits into our normal cycle of perpetual upgrades. Traditionally we haven't increased retention by as large a margin as we are during this current upgrade; however, we have decided to accelerate our upgrade cycle so that we can continue to lead Usenet and provide more value for our customers. By nearly doubling our storage capacity Giganews is investing in our service so our customers can continue to enjoy the best Usenet experience possible." said David Vogelpohl, Giganews' Vice President of Marketing and Sales.
Giganews expect their retention upgrade to be completed by the end of this summer. The newsgroups are slowly beginning to catch on in the file-sharing community as a viable alternative to the sometimes dangerous waters of P2P. With a dramatic increase in retention provided by Giganews without an increase in price, more skeptics may find themselves jumping ship.
