It appears that BigChampagne, a research organization that specializes in gathering file-sharing statistics, has some new companionship. A new file-sharing statistical organization, InfoFilter, has arrived on the scene with some interesting revelations. Somewhat different in nature from BigChampagne, InfoFilter specializes in the popularity of torrents and allows copyright holders to track their importance online.

The unauthorized sharing of files on the Internet may outwardly draw the ire of copyright holders; yet it also provides significant insight as well. It allows copyright holders to monitor the progress and popularity of their work, especially TV shows, and change marketing strategies accordingly. BigChampagne delves into this arena as well; however InfoFilter has a more extensive catalog of torrent tracking. The company provides the most popular torrents and covers Games, Anime, Music, Software, TV Shows and Videos.

There are some interesting differences as well between InfoFilter and BigChampagne. BigChampagne’s movie stats tend to focus primarily on newer theatrical movies, while InfoFilter takes a more overall approach. In addition, InfoFilter has two interesting features – it publishes the exact script in which the file is posted, while also providing the file size.

So which torrent is the most popular? BigChampagne and InfoFilter reveal very different results, and our inquiries to InfoFilter went unanswered at the time of publication. It appears that InfoFilter simply gathers the sum of seeders and leechers to gauge the popularity of a torrent file – however BigChampagne gathers torrent titles.

This seemingly insignificant detail equates to substantial differences when tallying popularity. Torrent files - the actual file that initiates the download/upload process - reflects a specific and unique torrent file. Torrent titles (which could be any number of torrent files, but for example all have "Star Wars" in their title), occur much more frequently and more closely reflect pop culture and leading consumer choices.
