Jon Johansen will be tried for theft charges again, according to his lawyer. The nineteen year old from Oslo has been acquitted on the charges once already. Johansen admits to creating a piece of software that allows legally purchased DVD’s to be played on his computer with the Linux operation system. However, the Oslo district court ruled that this fell within the “fair use” range of the product.

The MPAA sees this decision as a major blow to there offensive against worldwide piracy. The group claims that piracy costs the U.S. motion picture industry $3 billion annually in lost sales. This number is disputed by many however of actually being a lot lower. The appeal case against Johansen isn’t expected to take place until sometime after this summer.
