LimeWire 4.0 Arrives May 18

LimeWire has been a mainstay of the Gnutella community since its early days back in 2000. While not the first Gnutella client to replace the old "official" .56 version, LimeWire helped bring about a renewed interest in this open community.The first Gnutella client to replace version .56 was a program fondly remembered as ToadNode. This client started the rejuvenation process of this network. Interest in Gnutella exploded during the collapse of Napster back in 2000. However, the network at the time was unable to handle the influx of users, which caused its temporary decline.
Later in 2000, two new players arrived in the Gnutella community, LimeWire and BearShare. Both began to revolutionize the Gnutella community by reintroducing the clients under their respective flags. The two teams improved the network and developed clients that were both user friendly and much easier to use.
During the days of version .56, it was necessary to enter a Gnutella host (gateway) in order to connect to the network. Gnutella chat rooms started popping up on IRC, where people would race across channels in an attempt to find a working IP. Although this did help develop a strong Gnutella community, additional improvements to the client and network no longer made this necessary.
So here we are, four years later and Gnutella is still an integral part of the P2P community. While it seems to have stagnated at 200,000 users, it is certainly a viable enough community to venture out of mediocrity and perhaps become the great network many thought it would be. 3) Search drill down results. Searches in LimeWire now immediately display the artists, albums and other information that fully describes files.
4) Faster connections on start up.
5) Proxy support. Users can now use web proxies to route their downloads to protect their identity.
6) A new search progress bar in each search tab that indicates the percentage of completion of a search.
7) Detection. When the Internet connection is down or a firewall is blocking access to the Internet, Lime Wire will inform the user.
8) Support for International searches and International groups. 9) Improved downloads. By excluding the bad file sources, we rapidly make use of all the good sources for faster and more reliable downloads.
