The Pirate Bay: Up, Down, Back Up Again

Despite all the rhetoric, The Pirate Bay remains a force to be reckoned with. Although the once perceived invincibility of The Pirate Bay has been diminished greatly, it's no secret that the agents of copyright enforcement would like to see this P2P landmark annihilated.

A big proponent of the anti-Pirate Bay crusade is BREIN, the Dutch copyright authority that has been a thorn for BitTorrent and other file-sharing mechanisms. BREIN has been slowly chipping away at The Pirate Bay's global reach, and as of yesterday, successfully knocked it offline on a global scale. Typically, BREIN was only able to block small portions of the global population - but this was big time.

Not surprisingly, BREIN used the media and Internets to spread word of their victory, albeit a brief one.

"Supplying services to such a well-known illegal site is asking for trouble", says BREIN director Tim Kuik. "The Swedish owners have been criminally convicted and the site has been ruled illegal in various countries amongst which the Netherlands. In case Dutch providers keep the site up then we will appeal to them to cease and desist".

So it appears that hosting anything even remotely related to The Pirate Bay is out of the question, at least in the Netherlands. But The Pirate Bay is still operational, so whatever block occurred in The Netherlands has been supplanted with another. Many have been wondering how much longer The Pirate Bay can continue with the cat and mouse game, but it seems that it can for at least for a while longer.
