Demonoid Returns

The private/semi-private/occasionally-open-registration BitTorrent tracker Demonoid has returned, albeit at a slightly deteriorated state. Under attack from the Dutch copyright traffic cop BREIN since last month, the site was forced offline in late June.

More specifically, BREIN targeted Demonoid's web host, the Dutch based web hosing company LeaseWeb. BREIN filed a legal complaint against the company, attempting to force LeaseWeb to disable the site and divulge the identity of the owner. BREIN won the case, however LeaseWeb has yet to divulge the owner's identity pending an appeal.

Demonoid never completely went offline during these events, however their tracking ability did. Updates to the site were posted regularly, vaguely apprising visitors of their situation. Of particular note was their most recent post, hinting at the site's future.

"We were planning on returning online in the next few hours - probably tomorrow afternoon. But due some recent events, and following the advice of a lot of you, we will make a few more changes that might take a few days longer. As always, thanks for you continued support and patience. For the ones wondering, the timing of the downtime was coincidental."

So what exactly happened? Since the Netherlands has become a hostile territory, it seems that Demonoid has left this once open country and resettled in Quebec, Canada.

An IP trace of "209.44.123.21" shows that Demonoid has set up shop in our northern neighbor. The site is still a bit shaky, as it's likely a tremendous amount of work is still being done.

"Still working on this," a post to Demonoid reads. "Just got back online. Please restart your bittorrent client! More later."

Demonoid is back, and soon enough their full functionality will return as well. Until all the kinks are ironed out, the site is noticeably slow to navigate, no doubt due to the excessive traffic pounding Demonoid's servers. Yet Demonoid is on the road to recovery, leaving those in pursuit a step behind.
