eXeem Lite Launched

Postby Malicious Intent » Thu Jan 20, 2005 10:58 pm

Shortly after taking over Kazaa in late 2001, Sharman Networks began adding surreptitious spyware and adware to the installation files of the software, which they called Kazaa Media Desktop.

Despite the adware and spyware, users were reluctant to turn their back on Kazaa Media Desktop. It remained a superior program, due to fast transfer speeds and a wide range of content.

Shortly after, in April 2002, file sharers were rescued from computer slow downs, crashes and the invasion of privacy suffered after installing Kazaa. Kazaa Lite was born.

Three years later and eXeem is now touted as the hottest download of the year. Developed as a joint venture between Swarm Systems and the late SuprNova, the software promises to bring all the benefits of BitTorrent swarming, but without the use of problematic Torrent websites.

However, the software comes at a price. As part of the installation, there will be optional and compulsory adware installations.

“I made eXeem Lite because eXeem has Cydoor spyware that installs on your pc every time you start it up,” Dan told Slyck.

Dan, who did not wish to disclose his real name, is developing eXeem Lite in order to make a preemptive strike against eXeem’s potential mass scale invasion of privacy. The homepage of the project can be found at exlite.net.

Dan believes that “Cydoor adware … with a cookie tracker and a banner” will be included in the full version of eXeem.

The optional adware will pose a further threat to new users, who are unlikely to receive a clear warning about any dangers of the additional files. The setup is expected to resemble Ares Galaxy, which gives users the chance to opt-out rather than opt-in. However, the full version has not yet been seen publicly, so may be safer than some file sharers fear.

Sloncek of SuprNova has been defensive of the adware included in eXeem, telling readers on the SuprNova Forums:

“What this Cydoor is going to do is, display the ads inside the program, just like the ads on the SuprNova.org have been right now. But nobody complained that they will not use the SuprNova.org, because it had ads on it. Well guys, those ads were Cydoor ads too. I would have not allowed this kind of ads being in the program, if I was not sure if they are safe!

“There will NOT be any spyware or very annoying adware bundled with the software. You will have an option to also install sponsor toolbar inside would also include features for helping you use eXeem (searching through eXeem, your UP and DOWN speed, and similar funtions).”

Dan is not concerned about what Swarm Systems thinks of his software,

“…any program that has any type of spyware is wrong so I am just doing my part.” he told Slyck.

The current version of the eXeem Lite removes Cydoor which is included in the private eXeem betas.

However, this release also circumvents a required serial key, giving access to what is essentially a private network. As such, it is not recommend.

In addition, users have also complained that the software is buggy.

Dan believes that an eXeem Lite based on the full version of eXeem will be available within one day of the public beta release.

Nsane Productions have also promised to launch a version of eXeem Lite in the future.

Swarm Systems are unlikely to sit by. To them, eXeem is an investment for which they want to be paid. Although eXeem Lite may help improve the quality of the sharers on the network, history has shown that copyright holders do not react kindly to groups who take away from their control.

This is a copy of my very brief question answer session in their irc channel I hope this helps some.

<Me> Why did exeem contain spyware to begin with?
<eXLite-Admin> Slonek= Money Man lol
<Fusen> or in his excuse "the developers need to be paid"

<Me> Is exeem centralized and do you have to connect to an exeem server to download/upload?
<Fusen> eXeem is semi de-centralized
<Fusen> you have to connect to an eXeem server at startup

Tried it last night, but after some minutes I had a disconnection. My router lost the connection and I had to restart the router to work.

When this prog comes to life after beta, isn't it going to be like kazaa been flooded with fake files? Just curiou... :?

POSSIBLY MUCH WORSE!

Because a Bittorrent release gets spread powered by the downloader's own bandwidth, a fake file spewer can release a lot of files to a lot of people without expending much bandwidth himself. By the time the first person completes the file and realizes that it is a fake, an awful lot of people will have wasted a tremendous amount of bandwidth downloading it.

This means that you will still need to have a source of VERIFIED FILES such as what gets posted in a release site by trusted members. ... But then, if you still are going to need to download releases from a website, then what is the point of using eXeem instead of Bittorrent?

Good question

Well yes, it seems that way. You see, with KaZaA their license says that they do not monitor files, so that means they CANNOT filter out suspected fake files. This means that KaZaA will not get in trouble if illegal files are found on the network. Exeem may do the same thing, or they may add a filter excluding files with the slightest amount of fakeness (eg, very small fileseize for a game, they may ban certain users/IP addresses that have been known for fake files, they may exclude files that have bad ratings and comments etc).

The difference between kazaa and exeem when it comes to fake files, is that in exeem, you can add comments to each of the files to say how good it is, or whether or not it is fake etc.

So basically, yes it will have fake files on it, but not as many as kazaa in the end.

thats my opinion though, could turn out much differently.

Yes, agreeing with 'tm' there will be sites for verified files, thats why they have the exeem lniks integrated in exeem, like magnet and fasttrack links. So there will probably be a lot of exeem verified links.

The great thing about exeem is that pretty much EVERY file there you will be able to download without any 'more sources needed' etc crap. Just easy and simple. IMO anyway.

if you want to use eXlite without a serial you need a list of nodes which can be found as a .reg file from the irc channel

What if someone can integrate a plugin to check scene releases with nforce and match the file size? I think this will eliminate fake files in a great extend.
Just a thought.
Its still bittorrent where most of the files requested are the new ones aka scene releases.

Does exeem work like edonkey or gnutella in that you can download a list of nodes/servers from outside sources? Or be able to 'bootstrap' from a functioning node if you just know its IP?

just so ya know, you can connect on exeem without a serial and withut that reg file, just click close on the seril number box and click on 'new files' and then 'refresh'. Then your in.

Also, thats a really good idea 'poullos' (about the verification of files on the nforce site).

Well actually yeah they did, Prehaps he doesn't remember all those stripped down "clean/lite" suprnova mirrors.

eXlite registry hack

Postby AussieMatt » Fri Jan 21, 2005 10:42 am

It looks like Swarm Networks makes all beta clients log into a central server to get a node list. It seems they patched thier server and are blocking exlite nodes from loging in to its central server, so much for decentralisation .
They may set a dangerous precedent if they can show they can actually controll the network in this way if authetication is still used in the final version .

Try this registry hack from the xlite FAQ
Ill post it as text so you can check it out before you run it .
Copy and paste it save it as nodes.reg and run the script

Code: Select all

there you go I made the node.reg file I'm hosting for irc channel smaller, this just as someone said before will manually add a lsit of nodes for you to connect to the network with as like the above user said the logon part of the network is centralized but after that its stay on till there are no users left

could someone just create a list of nodes and when you start the program it will connect to your list of nodes and will bypass the central server all together so you can get on anyway

Just downloading and displaying banner ads does not require the intrusive BHO hooks that the Cydoor code uses.

BTW: unless banner ads pay by the number of times displayed rather than actual clicks. I doubt many clicks come from people here. Most if not all of us do not or should not be clicking such ads anymore.

I think I said this before but I'll say it again. What exactly are the eXeem team doing to deserve money from ad revenue?

Most of the underlying code is made using libtorrent. Which they didn't make. They added the code for searching the network but the underlying download part they did not create. Sure we should donate money for the nice GUI and the decentralisation but not put up with Cydoor.

Anyway why do I care. I'm using eXeem lite. Are they going to sue me for it?

How much files/users are on exeem? I mean is it better then edonkey in terms of speeds, if it's based on bittorent, then it should have good speeds.
