Pandora Reaches Settlement with RIAA for $90 Million

Postby sunnyd » Fri Oct 23, 2015 9:15 am

The long-standing copyright dispute by the music industry over the streaming and use of pre-1972 song recordings is still an issue that arises often, but the argument has finally ended for Internet radio company Pandora. According to a press release, Pandora has reached a confidential settlement with ABKCO Music & Records, Capitol Records, Sony Music Entertainment, UMG Recordings and Warner Music Group, for $90 million.

This settlement will end the litigation over Pandora's use of sound recordings authored before 1972 through the end of 2016. Pandora will have to obtain new licensing with the music labels going forward.

This is a second recent victory for the RIAA over the use of pre-1972 songs, which in June of this year reached a settlement with SiriusXM for $210 million stemming from a court victory in September of 2014. The RIAA appears to be celebrating the outcome, and in a statement issued following the agreement, RIAA Chairman and CEO, Cary Sherman said, "Major settlements with SiriusXM and now Pandora means that an iconic generation of artists and the labels that supported them will be paid for the use of their creative works."

CBS Radio, iHeartMedia and Cumulus, three other broadcasters are also still facing legal action for the same thing, and Pandora still faces another lawsuit by Flo & Eddie of The Turtles which is currently before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals for review.

With this settlement now behind them, for Pandora, it’s pay the price and let the music play.
