what program works better than Newsbin Pro

Postby somewherenc » Sat Sep 06, 2014 6:03 am

I may be asking too much or expecting too much.

I am an old Usenet user. I started with windows file folder/email program. Ugh. Everything done manually. I then jumped into what I considered to be a Mercedes-Benz versions. X-news. Free fairly powerful but still required me to
manually process files. I have just about every utility program needed to decode multi-part files. I have at least 4 media file players. So for the most part I know my stuff. Around Dec 2012 I invested into a paid program Newsbin Pro. I liked that it took care of multi-part files, mostly quick download speeds due to multiple connections and combined and decoded zip files. I have used multiple news servers over the years. Newshosting, Giganews, Supernews, and several others that I have forgotten about. Supernews is owned by Giganews but it's pricing is better for my wallet. I was with them for 4-5 years. Just within the last 2 years there service has gone down the rabbit hole. When they had about 3 years retention you could reliably download up to that date back and the post were there. About 2 years ago when they went to 1700 days you could go back about 750-800 days and still retrieve old stuff. Within the last year it has been down to about 500 days, The big players promise 2200 days of retention but they can't deliver. I was hesitant at first to use a block account but I found 1 that what they state is there is actually there.

I do not subscribe to any NZB service so I know that I am already at a disadvantage. I still use my X-news along with my other programs. It gives the least amount of fits though it cannot handle more than 400k worth of post at a time. I monitor about 20 groups. Some of the groups have about 5 mil post and NBP does compact them. The problem I am having is that I set the download age to say 2200 days. I will download all the post from that server. The download manager shows that all the post went into the storage.db but the screen only is showing about half the post or about 1100 days. Is there Any Newsreader that does not bog down when the post/headers get around 40 mil? Is there a program that handles multi-part files and has multi-connection capability that would only let me say download backwards? I mean that it would start at the earliest date and move forward to a middle date. So from 2200 days to say 1100 day chunks. Then I am not loading all the headers at the same time which I think is bogging NBP down?

hi somewhere, and welcome to slyck :)

that's a great question, and unfortunately i'm not able to answer it, you've been working with usenet far longer than i have, from the sounds of it. i'm still learning. but one thing that does strike me is the retention issue. i can't speak for other providers, but i'm downloading a post from 2000+ days ago as we speak without issue.

Retention is not an issue with Thecubenet. They state they have 2200+ days of articles. They are there for the most part.
Unfortunately I have found out that Astraweb is almost as bad as SuperNews / Giganews.

But retention is not the problem. The way the program works is the issue. One of the admin people at Newsbin Pro have responded to my immediate concern. I have an Intel Core i3 2330M NB with 640gb internal hard drive. Storage should not be a problem. Something screwy with the program is the problem.

When I only had one provider and limited days because of SN bad server retention the program worked great. I monitor about 20 NG constantly. What I would really like is someone who has used Newsbin Pro who uses multiple newservers and the groups have close to 40 mil worth of post. How did they set Newbin Pro up and how they are successfully able to use the program without a major stumble everyday!!!!

DMCA is not an issue for me so I cannot help you with that. I am not trying to be snide but I rarely try to d/l DMCA material. I think DMCA is a problem everywhere there is a USA server. The Cubenet is a reseller for UNS holdings. But they use different servers. Try them out with a block account. That is what I did. I got a great deal. 480gb for 30 USD.
I do not think the Usenet providers are making the money they once did and a litigation problem could be financially
draining.

The special is gone but $2.99 they have a 5gb block or 25gb block for $6.99

Idk . I am currently working on old post in groups that I regularly monitor. I will try going to some music programs tomorrow and see if a current group new album is being censored.

I know what DMCA is and when I have tried d/l recent albums by music groups in SuperNews yes no go. so I will try for you and get back to you sometime 2 moro.

how about Thecubenet ?

when you did download something do you get any kind of " article deleted due to dmca complaint" ?

i get thise a lot on astraweb so i have to use tweaknews witch only deletes if the offending content is copyrighted in europe or under dutch law (i think), child porn (witch is universally illegal) and terrorism communications (witch is also universally illegal).

i am asking because i may consider signing up with Thecubenet if they are like tweaknews where they do not observe american dmca

I thought I sent you a message telling you what I found. I tried to pm you because I am a little leery of telling the world
what I d/l. I d/l a very popular US summer series program episode and an recent album/cd by an aging rock guitar great.
No article deleted msg due to dmca complaints. Just try one of there small amount block accounts and see if they are agreeable to you,

I figured out what I was doing wrong in NBP and it is working again. Have you ever tried Alltopia or Readnews?

Highwinds has taken over many other providers, like EuroAccess and Readnews. I found that out when my Dutch server started taking things down far more often.

Dmca is not a concern for me. I can do w/o a lot of the most recent programming. I watch over the air broadcast for the most part. Now CBS is going to screw with my plans this coming year with some of it's older programs being moved around. Sports broadcasting (PGA Golf, Nascar and Pro Football I can still get over the air for most of the year, Unfortunately, watching these types of events later(rebuild) is going against the grain because every major sports broadcasting group are going to be covering the events and I can read about them.

I use a block account from an Highwinds reseller that shows headers/post that are several years old and are actually there. Unlike Giganews. Supernews (a reseller who uses GN servers) and Astraweb. I am looking for another provider that may fill in where the Highwinds reseller is missing. I have learned over the past several years that tying up all yours hopes in a single provider is unrealistic. There is an excellent website:http://www.usenet-providers.net/newsgroup-resellers.php that gives the researcher a handle on who has what and who they provide for. So if I have accounts from two separate groups than the chances of me getting the files I need are better
