Newzbin2 Shuts Down

Postby SlyckTom » Wed Nov 28, 2012 8:31 pm

Newzbin2, the successor to Newzbin, has been forced offline, to the regret of many. Its history was peculiar and offered as a parallel example of file-sharing tenacity on par with the longevity of The Pirate Bay. However, its attempt to bring the once powerful Usenet indexing site back ultimately succumbed to the pressures of forces that wished it gone, as it can no longer realistically accept payments or sustain itself economically. From Newzbin2:

"A combination of several factors has made this the only option. For a long time we have struggled with poor indexing of Usenet, poor numbers of reports caused by the majority of our editors dropping out & no-one replacing them. Our servers have been unstable and crashing on a regular basis meaning the NZBs & NFOs are unavailable for long periods and we don't have the money to replace them.

Newzbin2 was always hoped to be a viable underground commercial venture. The figures just don't stack up. Newzbin1 was said to have had 700,000 registered users. In fact that was the total number of people who ever signed up in the history of Newzbin from 2000 onwards & only a fraction were active, loads of people dropped out & went to other sites. We reckon they had about 100,000 users and of those only a few 10's of thousands paid premium topups. That still made good money for the Newzbin1 guys. We never quite got the trust and lots of people said "Newzbin2 is an MPA trap", that stung us bad and we never got the userbase back. We don't have much more than about 40000 active users and the number of premium users is in the small thousands. It costs much more to run than we bring in, It just doesn't stack up.

To make things worse all our payment providers dropped out or started running scared. The MPA sued Paypal and are going at our innocent payment provider Kthxbai Ltd in the UK. Our other payment provider has understandably lost their nerve. Result? We have no more payment providers to offer & no realistic means of taking money (no, Bitcoin isn't credible as it's just too hard for 90% of people).

The tragedy is this: unlike Newzbin1 we are 100% DMCA compliant. We have acted on every DMCA notice we received without stalling or playing games: if there was a DMCA complaint the report was gone. Period. That was a condition of our advertising & payment partners so we complied but we never got a single complaint from the MPA. Not one.

Will we be back? not as a search service but we might run a blog from this site at some point."

GOOOOOOOOOD RIDANCE!!!!!

for me not so much as the an mpaa trap (though that was still an issue) but more that they where a completely for profit site where they charged for download credits.

it is ok if they charge a vip fee but to charge for download credits that is taking it too far.

Quite sad, i used it since they started and had no problem paying them 9 bucks for an entire year.

Recently they made a post about some of the editors splitting off and making their own NZB site but never mentioned the name. Anyone know the sites URL?

Not sure what you mean by this, it was under 10 dollars for an entire year. I spent 10 dollars on candy and soda last night and its almost all gone!

So after hearing this news i decided to switch back to UNS from Astra for the XPAT and built in global search. After signing up i decided to try and d/l a show that i grabbed just two hours ago with Astra only to find none of it d/led, all of it is completely INC. So i ticked the Astra server and tried it again, the show is still d/ling fine on Astra..

I tried another show, we only watch for or five tv shows regularly, and it failed as well. These shows were just posted a few hours ago so either they do a preemptive take down or the server hasnt 'caught up' yet.

Just thought id post this in case anyone else had the same idea. I will be canceling USN immediately and sticking with Astra for now.

most nzb sites use their advertizers to pay for the site operations and any charging customers they do are for vip access and it is a 1 time charge.

look at nzbmatrix for example they only charge once for vip membership.

the rest of the income comes from ads posted on the site.

i am one to milk every piede of value from my money.
if i am going to spend any money on something i want to get money back in savings.

for example if i buy an hdmi recorder that ignores hdcp and macrovision i may pay $500 for the capture device.

i then expect to capture more than $300 in content and then the money is recovered in savings.

lets say a movie costs $30 on bluray and the same movie and i can get it on pay per view and on demand for $3 and after 10 to 20 movies i have payed for the device in the savings by not having to buy the bluray.

and the good part i can then edit the recordings to remove juicy parts (porn, swearing and sexually resembling words).

and right now there is no easy mac solution for ripping blu ray disks that removes the drm as well yet

You know to be honest i had no idea how other sites operated as i never used anything else, at least not very often at all. Thanks for the explanation and information, ejonesss, much appreciated.

Id been a member @ NzbMatrix since 2009 and maybe used it twice until last night. After playing around there for a few hours i sent them my ten bucks. One thing i will miss tho is the raw searches of newzbin but NzbM is certainly an excellent indexer.

Thanks again for the info!

I could see this coming. I have had to use their client on Virgin ISP to get past the block for some time now, which is a pain, and could have reduced the number of users. The raw usenet search was incredibly useful.

Does anyone know of an alternative raw search?
Is the Newsleecher search any good?

In all the years that ive been a Usenet junkie ive found nothing as good as NB's raw search. BUT www.binsearch.info isnt to bad, not to bad at all.

I havent used newsleecher in years but when i did the supersearch function was pretty decent, i just cant see paying for software and on top of that a search function too.

So now that all is said and done i went with NZBMatrix and Binsearch. NZBM is 10 bucks for 10 years and binsearch is free. It would be nice if all the NNTP servers hadnt races to 5 billion days retention, makes it impossible to load headers on a daily basis.

Virgin gives the usual "Server not found" message.
Fired up the Newzbin client and used the built-in browser to find it and:
Hey Presto!
Another useful link. Thanks

The French newsreader NiouzeFire has some nice built-in search engines.
