Traffic to Twitter Increases by 109 Percent

Postby SlyckTom » Wed Aug 11, 2010 3:14 pm

We just can't cover this story in 140 words or less, but if you ask the hundreds of millions of individuals that use Twitter, that's more than enough. In the short period of time Twitter has existed, the microblogging site has proven wildly popular for disseminating information. As of July 14, Twitter had 190 million users - far from the 500+ million that occupy Facebook - yet far more than the floundering MySpace's 66 million.

With over 6 billion humans, half of which have quick access to the Internet, there's plenty of room for even monolithic social networking sites like Facebook to expand. Twitter has a unique appeal, however, that Facebook can’t quite replicate; it's almost like a real time RSS that thrives on simplicity and quick info.

According to comScore, over 93 million individuals visited in June of this year, an increase of 109% from last year. Most of the new visitors came from Indonesia, Brazil and Venezuela. The comScore study suggests that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's recent use of Twitter may have caused a surge in that country.

" has experienced an explosion in global traffic over the past year, establishing itself as one of the most-visited social networking sites across each of the five worldwide regions,” said Graham Mudd, comScore vice president, search & media. “Today nearly 3 out of 4 global Internet users access social networking sites each month, making it one of the most ubiquitous activities across the web. As more users around the world have become acquainted with connecting and expressing themselves through social media, it has created an environment where new media like Twitter can emerge globally in a relatively short period of time."

Regionally, Latin America is leading the surge in users with a 305% increase from this time last year, with the Asian/Pacific region coming in second with a 243% increase. North America was growing the slowest, with only a 22% increase. However, the United States has a significant lead in mobile Twitter access, with over 8% of all US Twitter users tweeting with their mobile devices.

The US lagged behind other nations with only 12% of total internet users accessing the site. This is in stark contrast to Indonesia, where almost 21% of their Internet audience visited the site.
