Skype, Now the Largest Long-distance Phone Company

Postby piglets222 » Wed Mar 25, 2009 1:18 pm

Story : http://gigaom.com/2009/03/24/skype-now-the-largest-long-distance-company/

TeleGeography says that cross-border telephone traffic grew 14 percent in 2007 and is estimated to have grown 12 percent in 2008, to 384 billion minutes. Falling prices and rising popularity have flattened the revenues (see graph below the fold). The big bump in minutes (and the flattening of revenues) has come courtesy of Skype, the company owned by San Jose, Calif.-based eBay.

Skype’s cross-border traffic grew approximately 41 percent in 2008, to 33 billion minutes — equivalent to 8 percent of combined international telephone Skype traffic. Skype uses wholesale carriers such as iBasis and Level 3 for handling its network traffic. Five years after its launch, Skype is now the largest provider of cross-border voice communications in the world, Telegeography says. Or as my friend Andy Abramson would say: The world’s biggest minute stealer.

I'm not sure why you were unable to find info as its all available from the frontpage, but here goes:

Rates:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/callrates/

Other prices:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/

Payment methods:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/paymentmethods/

Works like a charm, atleast for me :)

I dont see how you getting free long distance (not international) minutes = proof that skype isnt the largest international phone company in terms of minutes used.

The issue is having POPs and the ability to do business in a variety of countries is why Skype is so successful. Even the likes of Microsoft, Google, and other tech companies envy what Skype accomplished. Domestic carriers such as Verizon will now put skype at the top of their list to sabotage in the coming years--along with alot of other FREE VOIP carriers.. but for now the FREE carriers serve to undermine the lite usage customers away form subscribing to VOIP services.
