Don't download anything emule or donkey *warning*

Postby kellypi » Sat Jan 03, 2009 7:07 pm

i just went to install an emule i'd downloaded.

thankfully i scanned it with spybot first. it has the zango trojan in it.

anything mule or donkey wont touch this computer. they are trojanware now

trust me. i had zango and a few more trojans. zango is nasty. i ended up doing a full system restore from my original restore disks to get rid of them all

be forewarned.

emule and edonkey are trojanware, dont install them for your own sake!

I,m pretty sure the versions you obtained where doctored ones and not from the official sites, this is the same for any type of client, go to the official or most reputable sites to obtain clean versions.

Do you remember where you got the version with the malware ? ?

Say what?
Did you just download a file from the edonkey network and found a trojan or did you
download edonkey or emule and your anti-spyware said it was a trojan?

I just downloaded emule and scanned it 6 ways to sunday... no ttojan found.

If you downloaded "edonkey" thats a fake... that company went out of business 3 years ago.

If your downloading emule... the real site is ...
http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=1

If you downloaded that file from anywhere else its' a fake.

zango isnt malware. its a very nasty trojan.

i got it from that site, the one zbeast mentioned. my word. none of my other scanners found anything wrong with it, but who trusts zone alarm and nod lately? i depend on spybot for important things

the malware scan was fine, the heuristic scan found zango :)

You have to be getting a false positive..
I have compared the a new download with my archive of the current version of this emule.
the hash is the same.. I've scanned this program with samantech anti-virus, I've scanned it with spybot, I've
scanned it with pestpatrol, I've scanned it with malwarebytes anit-malware, Ive scanned with avast anti-virus,
I've scanned for spyware sig's using hijack this.
I've always logged all network connections looking for possible spyware downloads.... er.. nothing.

I set up a fresh computer with no service pack's installed but connected to the internet via my firewall.
Installed the current version of emule on a clean system with no anti-virus and not spyware on the system.

The loaded anti-spypware ware and anti-virus... nothing detected.

per this website ... I ran hijack this ..
http://www.pchell.com/support/zango.shtml
Zango was not found.

I then downloaded and examined the source code..
it has not changed... it's the same a as my archive...
I took a look at all dll's being installed.. nope nothing there.
If I wanted to to totally -evil on it's ass. I could run the program under a debugger and look for call's
that should not be occurring but I'm not going to do that.

I'm sorry, I don't know what your seeing but i'm not getting the same results here.
zango is big real big... so it's easy to see.. it's like just over 3 megs...
So it's not going to be able to hide from me.

I currently have a the download I made today running on 4 different computers..
none of the computer's are generating any type of spyware behaviors all of the computers are connected to
the internet and all of the computers are downloading files.

There may be something going on but what ever it is has nothing to do with emule.

I downloaded emuleplus from www.emule.com and it does have zango and another toolbar in it. I thought it was suspicious for an open source program to have toolbars and was coming here to see if any one had reported it and then saw this thread on the frontpage. Is www.emule.com legit because as far as I can tell the legit version is at http://www.emule-project.net

emule.com is garbage. http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=1 is the legit site.

http://www.emule-project.net

is the ONLY legit site for the OFFICIAL windows client btw.

There are a handful of other trustworthy developer and modder forums.
If in doubt, ASK in the official developer forum !!!!

The "semi-official" client for linux and mac os is Amule from www.amule.org .

What others have said.

What OP experienced is called false positive. It happens :) Should there be anything funny going on, it'd be posted all over eMule-Project forums. You say it's heuristic detection, then you should alert Spybot S&D devs that their application is tagging clean software.

Besides, it could be argued that Spybot Search and Destroy is past its prime. Other, more powerful software have taken its place.

Edit: according to virustotal, latest eMule installer available is clean. See results here http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/0e9d ... 0baaabaeee

I for one will be countering the obvious "error" in both threads. You don't need much for a something not true to get a life of its own.

The OP clearly is not aware of heuristic false positives or any other means of scanning files (Jotti, Virustotal, Virscan, or any other more credible software), and chose to post about this "eMule infected" issue in multiple threads.

Just because YOU are having issues with your emule, doesn't mean other have.
If you ever plan to download eMule via ed2k, get the link from their official site...

I run emule with Wine and it's been running fine, nothings turned up with my Avast Antivirus.

I do periodic scans as I've a Windows section on my computer and I make files for people with Windows PC's.
My God, its full of files!

In order to avoid scams like emule.com, Web of Trust does a great job. At least one gets a warning sign that pops up.
And on the main site, emule.com is listed as "fraud, scam, phishing".
If you're new to filesharing and unfamiliar with aspects of online security, it's simply not safe to use a computer without also having protective tools such as this at your disposal.
