Internet sites could be given 'cinema-style age ratings', Culture Secretary says

Postby heaver » Sat Dec 27, 2008 8:35 am

Story : http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/technology/technologynews/396505

Internet sites could be given cinema-style age ratings as part of a Government crackdown on offensive and harmful online activity to be launched in the New Year, the Culture Secretary says.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Andy Burnham says he believes that new standards of decency need to be applied to the web. He is planning to negotiate with Barack Obama’s incoming American administration to draw up new international rules for English language websites.

The Cabinet minister describes the internet as “quite a dangerous place” and says he wants internet-service providers (ISPs) to offer parents “child-safe” web services.

Giving film-style ratings to individual websites is one of the options being considered, he confirms.

Yet another NuLab authoritarian policy wrapped in the trojan-horse of "child protection."
Object to it? You must be a paedophile who wants babies to DIE.

With luck, the American constitution will strangle this one at birth.

I love the assumptions that:

a) The UK has any influence over US policy.

b) That an Anglo-US alliance can control the entire the English-speaking world

I'm all for this sort of ratings if in exchange for our allowing it the politicians stop taking bribes, gifts, donations etc or we enact a system of rating their corruption level, most take their living wage off joe public (aka "the electorate")and then get "donations" from vested interest groups to "see things their way", as long as this continues who would dare to trust their democratic free speech rights to any government or political group that puts itself above the law and the rest of us.

If you feel we should trust these politicians ask yourself the last time you saw one go to jail, its something I have only ever heard of once here in the UK despite multiple millions being swindled from the public by the same folks pushing for this anti democratic activity.
