FYI for any using Paypal for accessing Demonews

Postby Hikrill » Fri Sep 15, 2006 8:20 am

If you pay for newsgroup access through newsdemon using Paypal, you will NOT get the same number of groups you would get using a credit card. Newsdemon states they carry 50,000 NG. With Paypal selected as the payment option, this is stated by a rep from newsdemon, Paypal has told newsdemon what newsgroups are allowable, and wich ones are not. So by Paying with Paypal you get access to 45825. Unkown what groups Paypal deems unacceptable, but i really do not care.

I have 2 questions;

Who the FUCK is paypal to tell me what i can do with my payment.

And why is newsdemon charging the same amount for Paypal access than a credit card accees account.

Am i the only one pissed off??

Do PayPal have a no-porn policy? That might explain the missing groups.

I found this
I SIGNED UP WITH PAYPAL AND CANT DOWNLOAD ALL GROUPS...

OUR PAYPAL CUSTOMERS ARE SENT TO A DIFFERENT SERVER CLUSTER. THIS SERVER CLUSTER DOES NOT HAVE THE FULL COMPLIMENT OF GROUPS THAT OUR CREDIT CARD AND WORLDPAY CUSTOMERS RECEIVE. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE THE FULL COMPLIMENT, YOU SHOULD LOGIN TO THE MEMBERS AREA, THEN CLICK ON THIS LINK:

http://www.newsdemon.com/ppgroups.php

A different server altogether, interesting...
I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking, 'Did he use six superfluous adjectives or only five?' To tell the truth I forgot myself in all this excitement - but as I deal in English, the most powerful language in the world with subtle nuances that may blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' Well do you punk?

Actually, that's three questions. Let's start from the last.

3. No, you're not. I think that the eBay/Paypal axis has proven to be overly conservative. In trying to make sure that no-one thinks that Paypal are a bunch of gung-ho uber-libertarian wackos, they end up self-censoring to a huge degree.

2. Because they're still offering the same bandwidth and server availability - and that's what costs the money. Hosting the extra groups isn't really the major cost.

1. They're a company who doesn't want to be portrayed in the USA as a friend of pr0n merchants. The groups which you can't get via Paypal are the adult groups. Now, here in the UK, you can't get a verified Paypal account unless you tie it to a bank account or credit card, which in turn you're not supposed to have unless you're over 18. But, as I understand it, the same cannot be said for Paypal worldwide. So you could end up with under-18s seeing surgically enhanced naughty bits. And that, of course, would be the end of civilisation as we know it. Perfectly OK for them to see gory dismemberments, but God forbid they should glance at some tart's bits.

Hence, Newsdemon, in order to retain Paypal subscription had to toe the Paypal line. I can't say I like it - but I can understand Newsdemon. They are, after all, trying to run a business. And without payment processors, they can't do that. Bummer, but there you are.

I just remembered about this on Newzbin
XXX section removed [ 251 comments | View | Add a Comment ]

As already announced, the XXX section is now in the process of being removed (the previous news item has been superceded by this one), after we received such a requirement from our credit card processing bank.

So its not unusual it seems

Obviously, Paypal has a no-porn policy, which is their right. Other newsgroup providers designate a separate set of (porn-free) groups for Paypal-using customers.

I've been a promoter of Newsgroup downloading, demonstrating it to a lot of people I know, but having all those explicitly-named porn groups in the grouplist can make things a bit uncomfortable, to say the least, when trying to show someone like your aunt or your grandmother how to navigate to the Christian music groups without passing by all those reams of porn groups.

I would really like to see NSPs offering subscribers the option of having only non-X-rated newsgroups -- without requiring them to use Paypal.

Although binary newsgroups were originally the almost-exclusive domain of porn aficionados, with the growing popularity of newsgroups among mainstream P2P users in recent years, the clientele has certainly shifted, and today porn probably represents a small minority of downloaded material. Yet the newsgroup service providers still seem to cater to the porn customers (it seems about half the groups are porn-related) to the detriment of porn-averse customers.

Many parents of 12 and 13-year-old children might consider getting a newsgroup subscription as a safer alternative to Kazaa and Limewire -- if only it was free from porn and other objectionable material. Despite the many dozens of newsgroup resellers who could probably easily offer such porn-free service, potential customers seeking such a service who cannot get Paypal accounts are simply out of luck.

Whats to stop!!!

Postby Hikrill » Sat Sep 16, 2006 6:30 am

Whats to stop any other company just sayin HEY, we do not like the downloading of MP3's, DVD's and Software and they make the descision to censor access to any all groups??

This is my main concern, if paypal can make the decision for me, here in the dictatorship know as the USA, very soon ANY company, bank, Credit Card; will make the decision to stop allowing access to ANY Groups carying questionable posts??

Also got this yesterday:

We apologize for the reduction in newsgroups for our paypal customers. This was done to keep Newsdemon in compliance with paypal policies. We would be happy to convert you to another payment method that would allow you full access to groups. Thank you for using NewsDemon! The NewsDemon Team

Nothing to stop them I suppose! However if you couldn't access pron, mp3's or DVD & other warez through that particular News Server because of the payment methods they accepted they would probably go out of business pretty quickly! At least until they offered payment through companies that didn't stipulate what groups were offered to customers!....
