So he made his money from a booth at a fair.

Shame he didn't stick to selling MACE, CS cannisters, slingshots, "hunting" crossbows and tasers like the rest of them instead of selling counterfeit CDs. Then he wouldn't have been fined over $8,000 and sent to jail without parole for 5 years. Talk about a sense of priority

Makes dealing crack seem like a great alternative. This guy wasn't even making 30K a year and working his @ss off.

[sarcasm]I can see why organized crime and terrorists are so interested in pirating movies[/sarsacm]

Future story...

Ex movie pirates turn to dealing crack to avoid steep fines and long jail sentences.

He was a commercial venture and thus he was literaly taking money out of the pockets of the movie/music companies. He deserved to be prosecuted, although 5 years without parole is laughable and yet again the US have shown that murder is less serious than copyright infringement.

Also towards the end of the press release in the DOJ pdf, is this paragraph:

Mwangi was arrested after law enforcement officials received a complaint of a man in
the back seat of an SUV at the Zona Rosa shopping center, apparently masturbating. Police
officers found the defendant with his pants down around his ankles, watching a pornographic
DVD and masturbating. His activities could be seen by people outside the vehicle.

So not only are "pirates" funding terrorism and organised crime, they are now perverts as well. More scare tactics and from the DOJ no less. They may as well have said:

"Pirates are sexual preditors known to masturbate in public places and are known to help fund pedophile rings and international child trafficking."

That just proves what I've known all along, that it's bad for your health.

I think that bloke is going to like it in prison :-)

Being from Kansas City, the venue of this story, and being familiar with how the law operates over here, having had my owe experiences (although, I must say, not having been ever accused of selling DVDs or masturbating), I’m suspicious of the masturbating accusation. How was he visible in an SUV? Maybe this was just a legal pretext to “stop” and search him. I’ve notice that when law enforcement makes a false accusation, it’s always something disgusting – child abuse, some kind of perve thing, or maybe attacking old people. The news release didn’t mention what happened to the public indecency charge, if there ever was one.
