I may be asking too much or expecting too much.
I am an old Usenet user. I started with windows file folder/email program. Ugh. Everything done manually. I then jumped into what I considered to be a Mercedes-Benz versions. X-news. Free fairly powerful but still required me to
manually process files. I have just about every utility program needed to decode multi-part files. I have at least 4 media file players. So for the most part I know my stuff. Around Dec 2012 I invested into a paid program Newsbin Pro. I liked that it took care of multi-part files, mostly quick download speeds due to multiple connections and combined and decoded zip files. I have used multiple news servers over the years. Newshosting, Giganews, Supernews, and several others that I have forgotten about. Supernews is owned by Giganews but it's pricing is better for my wallet. I was with them for 4-5 years. Just within the last 2 years there service has gone down the rabbit hole. When they had about 3 years retention you could reliably download up to that date back and the post were there. About 2 years ago when they went to 1700 days you could go back about 750-800 days and still retrieve old stuff. Within the last year it has been down to about 500 days, The big players promise 2200 days of retention but they can't deliver. I was hesitant at first to use a block account but I found 1 that what they state is there is actually there.
I do not subscribe to any NZB service so I know that I am already at a disadvantage. I still use my X-news along with my other programs. It gives the least amount of fits though it cannot handle more than 400k worth of post at a time. I monitor about 20 groups. Some of the groups have about 5 mil post and NBP does compact them. The problem I am having is that I set the download age to say 2200 days. I will download all the post from that server. The download manager shows that all the post went into the storage.db but the screen only is showing about half the post or about 1100 days. Is there Any Newsreader that does not bog down when the post/headers get around 40 mil? Is there a program that handles multi-part files and has multi-connection capability that would only let me say download backwards? I mean that it would start at the earliest date and move forward to a middle date. So from 2200 days to say 1100 day chunks. Then I am not loading all the headers at the same time which I think is bogging NBP down?
