ACS Law Website Remains Down

Postby SlyckTom » Thu Sep 23, 2010 5:58 am

A group named 4chan went on an aggressive DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack earlier this week, assaulting the MPAA, RIAA, BPI and ACS Law websites. For the big name trade organizations, the attack had a significant public awareness effect for 4Chan's cause, but that's about it - the major industry sites appear to be functioning normally as of this writing. However, the ACS Law website remains down, thanks to the attack and the suspension of their account by their ISP (likely as a security precaution).

ACS Law is much like the US Copyright Group - except their operation is out of the United Kingdom. Thousands of Britons have been sent monetary demands for allegedly sharing copyrighted work. The tactics of ACS Law have been considered harsh and bullying by the public, thanks in part to their aggressive assault on free speech. On two occasions, their operation has been openly called a "scam" and "legal blackmail" in the House of Lords.

It's interesting to note that there are two distinct attacks on ACS Law's website - the first siege that occurred overnight Tuesday, and a subsequent attack on Wednesday. After the first assault, solicitor Andrew Crossley of ACS Law told The Register of the DDoS attack: "typical rubbish from pirates", "Big whoop..."

"It was only down for a few hours. I have far more concern over the fact of my train turning up 10 minutes late or having to queue for a coffee than them wasting my time with this sort of rubbish."

That appears to have agitated 4Chan and precipitated another DDoS attack, which has crippled the site again. Whether the site is currently down because of a continuing DoS attack (we tend to doubt it at this point) or because of ISP intervention (most likely), the fact remains that out of all the sites attacked, ACS Law remains the only one still down.

Whether or not it's true, Wikipedia states that their ISP has suspended them for payment issues.

Due to payment issues, the site got suspended by their ISP
