External Hardrive.

I'm shopping for a 1TB external hardrive. Been looking at Iomega, Western Digital and Seagate. Any advice on things to avoid?

Get a western digital. Your guarenteed a modern, reliable HDD (although this is less of an issue on 1TB+, since as long as you know its only got 1 HDD in its going to be a newer one, smaller sizes could use tech from a few years ago). Seagate drives of recent times have had several issues with reliablilty, so youd probably be ok but i wouldnt want to take a chance.
If you buy one from an OEM (iomega etc) you are not guarenteed what drive is in there.
If you have eSATA on your mobo then try and get one with that as the transfer speed of USB2 is painfully slow when your trying to backup a whole HDD.

+1 on the Western Digital suggestion and +1 on the eSATA suggestion.

I'm currently filling up a 1TB WD USB My Book for #1 son.

The slower USB speed does get in the way when transferring large video files
