usenet speeds dropped - things to check

Postby gbswales » Sat Jun 13, 2009 5:57 am

I have always enjoyed good throughput downloading from newsgroups but when I changed providers (because of general slow speeds) my usenet download rates dropped dramatically and stopped at certain times - I quickly found out that my new provider used BT Internet as their underlying provider and so switched to a smaller independent company who say that they dont block any ports or employ any traffic shaping or throttling.

I am still experiencing slow throughput - ave 370kbs at the moment! I have tried the following:-

Run giganews traceroute - this consistently shows up as 6000kbs
tried two major good newsgroup providers - AstraWeb and Giganews (also tried a couple of other free trials)
tried two different newsreaders - Ultraleecher and XNews - both the same and both have worked fine in the past
With astraweb I tried changing to alternative ports but it didnt change anything

I am just wondering if there is anything more that I should consider before accusing my ISP (O-bit is the underlying carrier) of throttling newsgroups. I am wondering if something could have changed some underlying setting on my PC or router - but have not conciously done so. All other internet activity is normal and my speeds rarely drop below 5Mbs

Should I pay the extra for SSL to see if this makes a difference - help I am lost as I have never before had any problem with usenet

Just to cover some basic stuff.

1. Try with more than 1 connection if you aren't already doing so. I use 6 connections to get 30Mbit (3700'ish KB/s) to Astraweb.

2. Make sure you connect to the server that's closest to you. Both Giganews and Astraweb have US and EU servers, so choose accordingly.

3: Make sure there are no other programs and/or users that hogs your bandwidth.

Are you already using GigaNews Accelerator?

Yes tried using that - also tried it just running giganews without astraweb in case the two didnt work well together

Does the slowdown occur during specific periods or is is it 24/7?

If your new provider is a cable internet, it could be that they are at capacity in your area. Cable is susceptible to periods of slowdown due to excessive use. DSL doesn't have this problem, but the speed of DSL is usually slower than cable, but only when the cable provider isn't bogged down. Due to it being a smaller provider, as you said, they may not have a high capacity.

Have you tried using different Port numbers that your Usenet provider supports?

Have you tested your application ?
Use tools running on M-Lab to test your Internet connection.
http://www.measurementlab.net/measurement-lab-tools#npad
Lots of good test and if you get bad results, call your isp and ask them why are they throttling, etc.
You can find out if your isp is doing any of that and more.
