Streaming Online Videos Across A Wireless Network

Postby gangstarr » Wed May 21, 2008 5:54 am

I have my pc, laptop, xbox(not 360) and my 2 flatmates' laptops all networked together so we can use eachothers' files. I'm just wondering if there is a way that we could watch videos streamed off the internet (eg from 4od or bbc iplayer) without having to download them to each computer? The main reason I want to be able to do this is so I can watch videos on the xbox in the living room that i've streamed on my computer.

Cheers

If I understand you correctly, what you're asking to do is to download and 'save' a copy of the streamed video so that you only need to stream it from the internet once. If so, you could use one of many sites like KeepVid (http://keepvid.com/) to download them.

Yeah, use a tool or service to get the streaming content saved to a file on one of your PCs. (as HC mentioned)
that being said, I would still suggest copying that file to the system that will be viewing it (your xbox I assume?) watching any large content on one system while it's actually stored on another system, will essentially mean you're 'streaming' it again, just over your own network instead of the internet.
While I do this all the time and is normally not a problem, I would expect the quality to suffer using a wireless connection shared among 3 or 4 devices as you describe.
Am I the ONLY one who remembers that video KILLED the radio star?

if your just interested in reducing the number of times an individual clip is downloaded add a chashing server to
your network.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

I think i left some quite fundamental info out of my last post (my bad it was a rushed post) it turns out the files i want are drm protected - is this possible to remove? Seems I can save the files easily its just playing them on different devices

Sorry guys, my bad
