Missing URL News Bug Isolated (Found Workaround)

Postby IceCube » Mon Oct 01, 2007 10:52 pm

For those keeping a close watch on the news flowing through Slyck, you may have noticed the occasional story where the URL is missing in the story even after the story is registered as 'URL seems OK' I think I figured out what causes this and how to work around this for the time being.

Basically, if you have a slightly lower speed connection (which is of the order of slower than 50MB/s ;) ) it takes an extra second to load the page. Typically, it's the Google ads that load last and take a little bit longer to load (though that's not always the case) I've finally managed to reproduce the problem where the URL goes through despite the URL checker making sure nothing goes wrong. Basically, if you paste the URL in the line and click 'Continue' before the page load, the form will check the URL, then say it's OK (as per usual) Unfortunately, when the page finishes loading the other bar, it defaults to clearing the form, thus causing the URL to mysteriously "vanish" even though you can continue to enter the info in the rest of the fields without a problem.

So, the workaround is simple. Make sure the page is fully loaded before entering the URL or else it'll vanish in the field. You can easily make sure the URL won't vanish by making sure something is still in that field. If it's gone, just refresh the page and re-paste the info (given the feature to edit info hasn't been implemented yet)

I thought I'd post this here just so everyone can avoid this issue altogether in the small time frame between now and when the bug is fixed. Thanks for your patience. :)

Block all the ads.

If there's one thing I'm ok with, it's Website ads. Sites don't pay for themselves, so I don't mind having standard ads load. And on rare occasions, I'll even click on one, even if I don't intend to buy anything, but just to see what it says. If I was on dial-up still, especially 14.4 kbps, then I would probably block as many ads as possible.

What I do not like are pop-ups. Never have, don't now, and never will. I'm glad Slyck doesn't have them, but my pop-up blocker would just block them by default anyway. The reason I don't like them is because I still suffer from a high degree of post traumatic stress during my first months on the Internet while browsing porno sites without a pop-up stopper. Before I start veering off track, Slyck as a whole is place to get technical and P2P information, help your peers out, and for miscellaneous odds and ends. I don't read all the news stories, but I do occasionally for those that pique my curiosity.

I've been going through some difficult changes in my life, so I don't visit Slyck as much as in the beginning, but I'll still continue to do so every now and then. For what it's worth, I really don't go to any other P2P information-type sites. It would just take too much out of me.

I have to confess that i've always blocked the ads, though I compensate by adding CONSIDERABLE value to the site with my very presence.
