So What Kind of News Are You Looking For?

Postby IceCube » Fri Jun 15, 2007 3:15 am

In all honest, I probably should have asked this a while ago, but I'm thinking of narrowing my focus on news. While thinking about it, I realised that I'm not sure which stories I should be picking. Belie it or not, I've actually been filtering out certain types of news while I'm aggregating news because it seemed to be a bit cumbersome to aggregate everything.

Here are what I've been focusing on:
Filesharing
Gadgetry
Hardware
Portable Technology
Astronomy
Printing Technology
Open Source movement
Closed Source movement
General software
New hardware/software
**AA's
Interviews
Photo Galleries

And here's what I've been filtering out lately (with the occasional exception):
Agriculture
Entertainment
Chemistry
General Crime (cybercrime being an exception)
Animal Sciences (filter out tonnes from CTV... which I get the feeling I know why CTV has been so big on animals being born now  )
Stock Markets
Religion

And here's a few that are somewhere in the middle:
Censorship
Privacy
ID Theft
Robots

I probably missed a bunch of catagories, but that should givey ou a general idea what I've been doing lately.

So... I'm now asking you if there's any changes in focus I should be thinking about. Is there any news you'd love to never see again? Is there anything I should focus on?

I know I got a couple votes for Astronomy being something great and an unofficial vote for OLED technology in particular. I also have a vote for avoiding the cell phone technology from now on.

Any other focuses I should change? Any focuses I should keep up with?

Feedback would be appreciated as I'm otherwise just considering removing a few focuses randomly.

You don't think you're being a little too picky now do you? ;)

I do think we probably need to narrow the scope a bit. Personally, my news interests are:

File-sharing
Gadgetry/Hardware
Astronomy (not to be confused with that Astrology mumbo jumbo)

Or anything funny/interesting ... and none of that depressing news you seem to get every time you switch on the TV these days.

- Filesharing
- Idea sharing (patents, IP, copyright, DRM, etc.)

In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.
