Why does Edonkey2000 have to phone home.

Postby Overnet User » Fri Sep 01, 2006 8:29 pm

I finally upgraded again to edonkey 1.4.6 I believe it is. The web site says that 1.4.5 is the most recent version and after reading the slyck forum, I got the 1.4.6. I did notice something though that I didn't notice before. I did the offline install and whatnot but when my donkey went to connect (the older donkeys would let you start up offline so your settings would be correct) but the new donkey said something like "could not connect to edonkey2000.com or something of the sort". It will not let you start up the client unless it can connect to the web site. Why is this and what information is it transmitting to the web site. I have been a pro owner for a long time and I always have reverted back to either .52Overnet or 1.0.9Edonkey2000/Overnet. I have just been getting tired of the security voulnerability warning that pops up and eventually, my donkey would crash by saying something like Edonkey has encountered a problem and needs to close. I didn't have a problem with my donkey until it started doing this and the messages about a security voulnerability also and I would still be using the older version 1.0.9 if it wouldn't eventually make me end the program(edonkey has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Why does the new 1.4.6 have to connect to the website in order to start and what information is it transmitting to the web site? Is it transmitting the files that I am dl to the site or hash code or what and why does it have to connect to the site just in order to start?
Thanks.

ok - on the surface, that looks innocent enough. but i'd strongly recommend to them that they clearly state that it does that. in a world full of applications that are up to no good, it can't hurt to be open about what communication your application attempts. most people that are paying enough attention to detect something like this will consider an unexpected communication attempt to be guilty until proven innocent. it takes so little effort to just tell people in advance what it's doing. if there is nothing shady about it, what's the harm in informing people about it up front?

I know nothing of this app, but just taking a stab at a possibility. Maybe it's trying to check for updates (ala auto-update) and it can't connect to the website for reasons I'm guessing you already set up in the first place. Maybe this is one way to try and stop users from by-passing the adware all these years, but like I said, that is purely a guess.

Install the clean version and find out. Its efficient and will retrieve files faster than slowmule. Much faster. And if its not speed you are concrned about, then it gives you a chance to know the app you know nothing about to begin with.

Fair enough, though for me personally, I rarely download anything. I just sit here and upload stuff all day pretty much. Between a million other things I want to learn (like various code languages and non-file-sharing apps) I don't think I even have a chance to get to something like that any time soon :(

It opens a little "homepage" that has random links from the eDonkey download center. And, if your client is out of date, the page that loads also has an "Old Version" label on it.

@Illuminist
Do you like eDonkey2000?
Spreading eDonkey2000-Lite is the best way to kill it!

Then, without eDonkey2000, there wil be not any eDonkey2000-Lite ;)

Well we figured out why Edonkey has to phone home. Just disable it and keep going. see here:
http://www.slyck.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26112

Technically only edonkey.com has closed, so all the edonkey downloads, updates and development are over...but not eDonkey2000. Just follow this simple guide, posted by an Italian forum:

1. Download 1.4.3b or previous versions, new versions are NOT recommended.

2. To get rid of the default homepage of edonkey (with the riaa announcement, made just to scare you. They are legal actions they can put on you for viewing the webiste) close Explorer and eDonkey and go to: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\, you'll find a file named HOSTS, open it with notepad and add the following code:

Code:
# eDonkey home - http://alltheweb.com/
66.94.229.254 home.edonkey.com
# # eDonkey home - http://alltheweb.com/

3. When eDonkey is restarted, you wont see anymore the RIAA message but a random homepage.

4. To connect properly to Overnet, you need the file contact.dat. This should be downloaded from the official website, but it's no longer possible.. Use this link to download the new contact.dat:
http://www.p2pforum.it/forum/attachment ... 1158393344

Replace it with the existing one..

I've tried edonkey 2000 1.4.3b and found that it does not seem to be any faster or slower than emule. I thnk this is just a myth.
