File Status: Looking!

Postby Louispgagne » Sat Apr 08, 2006 5:32 pm

hi guys, i recently made the transition from LimeWire Pro to Ed2k... and i use Edonkey 2000 PRO v1.4.3 as my client..i was ASTONISHED to see how big and extensive the search result are on this network...however, whenever i try to download a file, the status is always : looking...and it takes considerable time for the file to start downloading...(if it ever starts)... also...the speed is pretty slow when compared to limewire..i've only been able to complete very popular files.

i think i configured my ports/firewall correctly, do you have any idea of what might cause this problem?
thanks.

The status of looking is normal as you are waiting in other users queues.
If your status at the bottom is reachable then your ports etc..are OK.

thank you for your reply. yes, it does say Reachable at the bottom.. but then...does it mean that it is normal for a file to wait minutes, see hours, to even start downloading on the Edonkey network? am i the only one to experience this ?
or

is the edonkey network simply requires this waiting to happen because it is built differently from say ; Limewire (Gnutella) where files start downloading in a matter of seconds?

Nope it's mostly a matter of demand, supply, content on the network and popularity of the individual file.

I should make this a form i can copy every time...

Edonkey is NOT FAST. If you get 1 700 meg file done out of 10 downloads in a week thats about average. Sometimes it will take hours. sometimes it will take months.

Dont overload it. and keep your upload speed as high as you can... and wait. lots of waiting.

With so many files. everyone is downloading something. theres a reason edonkey is the land of the queue :P

I avg 3 days for any one file.

This can over lap for multiple files thou, say you start 10 files at once, they'll proably all be done in 4-5 days.

Its deffiently not the faster creature in existance, but it has almost anything you can want.

I plan ahead, and try to always have something else dling to entertain me for when ever I get borred and delete what I have at the moment

If you want speed, you most likely cannot have size. Check out Ares if you want a network faster than Gnutella. BitTorrent is worth a try as well.

Isn't slightly beneath your maximum preferable? Because you risk choking off some of your downloads and your surfing without any cap at all.

"as you can" could imply just high enough to not choke your download. But yes, 80% of your max, is usually more than appropriate.

The ed2k network is for 24/7 online usage.

Just look at your initial queueposition at most users clients and you know it'll take some time to build up speed ...

Nothing for the impatient part of the population.

ive never had the patience for ED2k so i dont use it. i find that although it has everything in one place i am happy to search in different places to find what i want quicker!

ED2K is slow thats why they called it a donkey and not bullet the horse.

It's not to say maxing out your connection is impossible on the network. Actually, I recently maxed out my connection on a single file. :) Then again, that isn't saying much as my max speed is about 120KB/s. It's all a matter of what you download is all.
