Usenet Starting To Decline Badly

Postby napho » Wed Oct 31, 2012 9:41 pm

Takedowns by servers like Astraweb are starting to get people to question the future of Usenet. There's a lot less on it than private torrent sites, and it comes quite a bit later. Now things just aren't there anymore. Games first, then big movies, UFC , now some TV shows are being DMCA'ed. :(

do you have proof?

i am downloading a couple movies now and they seem to be downloading ok.

there are several factors.

1. there is a rule of posting to only post no more than a certain amount in gig per day so the group can handle the load and prevents lack of retention by causing the server to delete the old articles to make way for the new.

if someone exceeds the recommended posting amount for the day then either old articles get deleted too soon or the servers do not propagate out or sometimes just drops posts.

2. someone has posted fake nzbs to the nzb sites just to cheat their automated credit rewarding bots (it is a ratio like thing where you post something and it automatically gives you credit creating incentive to cheat the system by posting fakes.

you may want to try using some more reputable sites like nzbmatrix and nzbsrus both of witch has no such ratio system in fact any fakes gets nuked ane even deleted.

use binsearch and yabsearch with care because they are more likely to have fakes.

Of course not everything is taken down, but lots of things are now affected. Sometimes totally down, other times parts missing and not enough pars. These guys for example. They brag and bullshit, but they do damage to Usenet nonetheless. http://www.morganelligroup.com/?page_id=56

"As of September 2012, we have sent over 600,000 DMCA notices and verified the content has been removed for our clients. We have worked closely with several large providers to ensure our requests were handled swiftly. We have personally spoken with every major Usenet provider in the world through years of connections. We have assisted providers with API calls to ensure content has been removed promptly. We are the Usenet removal pioneers. Others may attempt to do this but will never get to our level. With our connections, our team that monitors over 17 indexing sites for filename changes, and our commitment to our clients, there is not another company on the planet that can do this better."

If you experience takedowns with a US server, the Dutch ones take longer to remove stuff and don't remove as many, but they still do some. Something like Sunny Usenet is really cheap, starting at $22 a year for 5mb unlimited. Nice backup anyway. Astraweb for example not only removes many things, but it lost a huge block of data a while ago; everything between 200 and 400 days old was gone.

is that due to a drive failure or is there some political motive there?

Not really political. They've been taking much heat in the last year between incompletes and takedowns.

Please don't post links to the morganelli group, it only serves to give them help with SEO and no one wants that. They have no respect of regard for the usenet - we have a responsibility to not acknowledge them or give them any kind of credit, their mission is pathetic. The Usenet will continue to thrive - we can always go back to browsing headers
I need more CowBell!!
Do it..you know you want to!
