Can Newshosting bring down Usenet with spam/virus flood?

Postby dan.smith » Mon Feb 07, 2011 1:08 am

Did you notice for the last 6 months or so if to download headers in any popular newsgroup - there is more spam than valid posts.

And it is getting worse.

In almost every article the headers state:

Organization: hitnews.eu
NNTP-Posting-Host: somehost
X-Trace: Posted through -> News.Hitnews.EU <-

How is it possible that the spam/virus gate is so easily allowed to exist and spread the incessable loads of viruses to the whole network?

It appears they also run the site xennews.com - both sites with the same paypal account under the company name "RSP Sales LLC"

Hitnews.eu - do they have any users, their about page states "under construction" or it is just a hit launchpad to bring down the whole Usenet by flooding it with constant powerful stream of the virus posts?

you can use a kill file to block the spam.

good newsreaders have some kind of filter rules that will mark the items for various use or allow automating the tasks.

like you can set a rule to mark all articles from a given user read or even not show them as well as to download all files from a given user.

The poster field is always different, legitimate poster identities and subjects are used as well.

Well, I've contacted hitnews.eu and this time they promptly closed the spammer account.

But the spammer made a wise move - he now posts from newshosting.

I contacted newshosting and reported the spammer (just sent them message headers as they suggest on their website when reporting abuse), but this is a dead end.

Oh, who could imagine, the mighty support agent Jesse now holds the keys of the Usenet.
