How much censoring and takedown going on?

Postby windtrader » Thu Dec 03, 2009 4:02 pm

I have followed newsgroups for a number of years and always thought usenet was "uncensored" and everything that was uploaded was available. Recently, I came across a few mentions that usenet providers, specifically the primary ones such as Giganews, HighWinds, and Astraweb, do readily comply with requests from copyright holders to remove specified material.

It may be my imagination but there seems some rather popular material is oddly missing. It could be simply that it has not been uploaded or cracked. What is your experience or sense that material does disappear into the ether? How much would you guess gets removed? Is there much difference between the primary NNTP services?

From what I can see, most of the "censoring" is in the area of illegal porn.
But most of the major news providers don't really censor anything else.

Most of the really good content providers are simply not posting to public servers anymore.
So ya, there's seems to be a real drought of content.
I have been looking for a few movies to show up on Usenet for a few weeks and it's still not up.

I'm finding a lot more content via streaming services when it comes to video.

So as for whats going on, I really don't know. It's all still out there but you have to work a little
harder to find it.

Then inquiring minds want to know just where to good content providers are posting these days?

When you mean streaming content, you mean from sources like Netflix online and hulu, etc?

Hard to say without knowing what it is you're looking for and not finding. I can say that for certain that I have no problem finding anything I am looking for.

I have information on one takedown campaign in 2008 for a major, major movie from a source very close to it. I was told that almost 100% of the providers complied.

"hot" releases like movie/msuic prerelease stuff is most of what is being taken down. Ive seen or heard very little to suggest that standard DVD/BR rips and albumbs get taken down on a regular basis. Although certainly there is some content being removed at the request of trade organisations, i generally find what im looking for, even if its not the best quality possible.

Most know about that one since it was so nuclear, in that the takedown was so widespread.

What I don't understand is if the major usenet providers will comply why isn't there much more content being taken down? There is still a lot of material that has sufficient commercial value to seem worth the effort to track and issue take down notices. It is so simple compared to P2P. Very easy to monitor what gets posted and very easy to go after the handful of major servers.

Usenet has always been able to stay in the shadows, I suppose since most of the energy has gone to the far more pervasive nature of P2P and ROI has always been magnitudes of order greater to take down P2P. I've not seen figures but if you stack usenet against P2P, it must just be a rounding error.

Uncensored Newsgroups
Giganews provides access to over 109,000 uncensored newsgroups. You'll be able to find all the information you're looking for without having to worry about missing articles in your favorite groups.
I guess there are a handful of others that they do censor; otherwise false advertising. They do NOT state they do ZERO censoring, just don't censor most all of them. :D

I haven't noticed much taken down lately except an XMen Wolverine workprint, a Harry Potter movie telesync, and various HBO TV shows that are 'nicked' by partial takedowns (1 of * articles).

It's a mystery why such takedowns are so limited to certain content and providers.
