Newsleecher Speed

Postby Bircher88 » Thu Jul 23, 2009 2:14 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm really hoping someone can help me with this. I've recently started using a combination of Giganews and Newsleecher, at best my speed reaches 1.18Mb/s but this is only between 11PM and 6PM so basically when I'm asleep or at work, as soon as it hits 6PM my speed drops to about 290Kb/s and remains this way until 11PM.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be please?

Thanks

6 to 11 pm is the classic profile of peak traffic on an ISP. chances are either your ISP is cable and has contention issues during that period, or they're throttling.

Great stuff, thanks for you're help mate.

is it worth upgrading to a 50mb modem? or are there any other ways to solve it?

You would need to contact your ISP and confirm if they are throttling you, they should say so if they are. Either way, its unlikely you'll be able to do anything your end to improve it other than upgrading your account to a faster/unmetered package (if available).

You can also change your port and see if this helps. Most Usenet companies provide SSL connetions for this very purpose. GigaNews does. You should check that out.
In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

Ay, by encrypting your usenet traffic using SSL your ISP won't be able to tell what type of traffic the connection is - and are therefore less likely to throttle it (as it could be streaming video for example). If you don't have the option of a better ISP, it's the next best bet.
