Newshosting Announces 400 Day Retention Commitment

Postby csn21 » Thu Mar 19, 2009 2:43 pm

Okay, this is getting stupid now.

March 19, 2009 -- Newshosting, the world's leading provider of premium Usenet newsgroup access, today announced they are extending Usenet content availability to an unprecedented, industry-leading, 400 days. Newshosting will continue upgrading data storage in the United States and Europe, ultimately providing members with access to 1 year and 35 days worth of content.

This announcement follows an earlier substantial retention upgrade to 250 days reported at the beginning of the year. With top-tier Usenet service features including Unlimited Bandwidth, SSL Encryption, 20 Concurrent Connections, and now 400 days retention, Newshosting provides Best-In-Industry Usenet newsgroup access at an exceptional price.

If by 'stupid' you mean 'great news for customers' then yes.

I don't think it's stupid either.
It'll save bandwidth, as in things won't have to be reuploaded as often.
And i love that you can think of a random movie or song, and I can find it on usenet.

400 days makes Giganews "Worlds Longest" 365 days look like promotial fluff though..

Yea except no provider currently has more than about 220 days, it'll still be ~4 months before any provider can actually give me a year old binary.

So they will have copyrighted material on their servers for over a year.

Surely the lawyers are coming!?

These are very exciting times for the Usenet community. Their 232 days of current binary retention is the highest true retention in the industry. Now with the storage capacity to support spooling to 400 days, Newshosting reaffirms itself as a very formidable player in the Usenet industry.

So NHXL really has 232 days of retention? I have found Giganews was not the only one that was having problems producing the days promised. I was with NH for a long time, it started the "unlimited usenet" when it was still in Dayton, but that was a different NH.

Not exactly..I retract my previous post

Currently I use newshosting block which has the same retention as the nhxl plan, they are served off the same farm I think since the retention is the same for each on the NH website. I have found that the retention is ~230 on some smaller bin groups and ~224 on the largest bin groups, this will only increase as they feed the mighty 400 day spool
