Only downloading at 10% of my Speed Test result

Postby TylerDurdenKites » Tue Mar 17, 2009 6:52 pm

I am currently trying out Astraweb and GrabIt for the first time and was expecting my connection to be maxed out, however it is currently downloading at only 10% of my maximum.

What could be the problem?

Some more information.

I went to SpeedTest.net and got a result of 3491 kb/s (which I know is probably pretty slow compared to some but it is all I can get in my area) and GrabIt shows speed of around 400KB/s.

It maybe that I am not working this out properly and there is a difference between the kb/s and the KB/s, can anyone clarify?

Okay, after a quick google it appears that I am indeed maxing out my connection as the 400KB/s is equal to 3200kb/s.

While not downloading anything .. run a ping test note the "Latency".
Now start a download from usenet... run a ping test and note the "latency"..
If it's over 200ms then your running as about as fast as you can.

Whats the max speed that your usenet provider can supply?
most usenet providers won't let you consume all there bandwidth for downloads.

In my current location I can only get about 1mb... average is about 500kb

you got it, tyler. speed tests are usually reported in bits per second. programs usually report bytes per second.

Some ISPs (Cox, for example) throttle NNTP traffic, so you might want to bear that in mind too
