GrabIt, Finds no groups "Connection Timeout"

Postby TylerDurdenKites » Tue Mar 17, 2009 5:25 pm

I am totally new to all this, but have just signed up for the Astraweb $11 a month deal and downloaded GrabIt.

I am looking for some help as I cannot get it to work at all!

I have installed Grabit and added the 3 servers suggested by Astraweb (news.astraweb.com, eu.news.astraweb.com and us.news.astraweb.com) and I have pushed the "Refresh Group List" button for each server but I get nothing. The status says connecting for a while, then it retries twice then changes to Connection timeout, what am I doing wrong??!

If you put in the right name and password, maybe a firewall is blocking the connection.

Thanks for the suggestion but I have definitely put the correct information and disabled the Firewall.

However I have just had a look at the server properties and tried disabling the "Change active group before downloading article" option and it is now working!

What is this setting supposed to do?

Wow. I didn't think that setting had anything to do with connecting. I thought it was about getting headers and groups after the initial connection. This is a first in the history of humanity. I could've sworn having it enabled was the preferred setting.

Hmmm, well perhaps it was just a coincidence!

Keep in mind that using the Group List and downloading headers is only one way to get content. The old-fashioned way.

Since NZBs became popular, many people don't even use headers anymore, and many modern binary "newsreaders" don't even support headers.

You might want to visit NZB sites, and just browse through their index of content (music, movies, games, etc) download the NZB file and load it in Grabit or other NZB-capable binary downloader. Then sit back while your file downloads. There's a lot of fake, poor-quality and password-protected content posted on newsgroups these days, so the sites that offer verified file indexes can help you cut through all the garbage.

I use mostly nzb's now, but not everything on Usenet is indexed on NZB sites or even search engines. Another way to check out headers is like this https://www.binsearch.info/browse.php?b ... &adv_col=1
Ultimately though, there's no substitute for checking headers daily in your favourite specialty group. The mods here on Slyck are partial to voyeur clips, and the only way to find them is to get the headers from the voyeur groups.

Try pinging the server.

Search over at Grabits forum for similar problems.

I guess you connecting before WAS a coincidence after all! Maybe you could try a different address and port. Here's the official Astraweb forum http://forums.newsbin.com/viewforum.php?f=20 , and btw, if you ever connect again  , Astraweb supports compressed headers which come 5-15x as fast as usual. You could try Newsbin, which supports the compression.

I was having good results using Newsleecher until a certain time this
evening when the connection got very slow and eventually stopped.

Is it possible my ISP has something to do with this?

Some ISPs do throttle. Try SSL and see if it helps. Many people have reported port 443 working better than 563 - which is my case as well as my ISP monitors 563. The astraweb SSL servers are:

ssl.astraweb.com Ports 443 or 563

ssl-eu.astraweb.com Ports 443 or 563 (European)

ssl-us.astraweb.com Ports 443 or 563 (US)

I always use the first one and have had no throttling problems.
