Giganews retention is not 240 days...

Postby real_per » Sun Jan 11, 2009 3:46 pm

The last couple of times, I've found some things I've wanted to sownload that are older than 200 days on Giganews, it'll always have lots of articles missing on the servers. And i never have enough articles to let the par files create the rest.

Is anyone experiencing this too ?

I think it's poor of Giganew to advertise 240 days retention, and charging a premium for it, and then to not deliver the service..!

This question seems to get asked every time there's a retention upgrade.

As ntscuser says, give it another 40 days. When they state that they have upgraded retention to 240 days, what they mean is that they have added storage to their servers to increase the capacity to 240 days. The extra storage will gradually get filled. Posts which would have been deleted because their age exceeded the previous retention limit will now begin filling the extra space.

Retention levels dropped recently as there was a bigger than expected surge in uploads late last year. Actual retention tends to yo-yo up and down, although not by huge amounts.

Since it's been over 1/2 a year since they announced their retention upgrade, the 40 days comments doesn't make sense.

The explanation from support is the same as Fartingbob writes. An unexpected surge in posted articles, making it impossible for them to keep their retention up to 240 days. A problem they say they're adressing by installing more storage.
It's not that it's that important, but with Giganews reputation, and their prices in mind, I'd think it would suit them to have some storage buffer to make sure they can keep their 240 days promise. Postings to Usenet has risen dramatically for the last 5 years, so it's hardly a surprise that the numbers continue to grow.

I'd settle for a reliable service right now. Half the posts I'm making aren't showing and other GigaNews posters are saying the same thing.

:::EDIT::: "Propagation" is the word I was looking for. It took a while for the posts I made earlier to eventually show on the server as complete. This has prompted some GigaNews posters to repost an entire archive when they really didn't need to.

In the past, the number listed on Giganews site was always the actual retention, not planned retention. It seems Giganews does not pre-announce planned future retention numbers as a few other providers do.
According to Giganews CTO Philip Molter:
"We generally tend not to preannounce our retention increases before the capacity has been brought online in case unforeseen circumstances prevent us from reaching our stated goals."

40 days passed last Friday, and Giganews' binary retention dropped even further, about another 10 days loss. (their retention search-engine listed most binaries as 190 days retention then)

For the last several months, Giganews has continued to advertise 240 day retention while delivering much less. Is it really too much trouble for them to simply edit the numbers on their website?
