Newsgroup download not making sense

I am not exactly new to newsgroups but I am starting to see that things have changed SEVERELY since I last used them.
It has been a couple of years since I did much with them if that helps.
I read the new guide of Newsgroups...but it is not helping much.

So here is my problem.
I have been trying to download a file.
I went and found the NZB. Oddly though, it is much smaller than I would have thought.
It is a single rar and only 14.5MB... I would have expected the program to be 10X that at the very least.
It did state that this was the entire program in the NZB.
I downloaded it however and unrared it.
There is no instructions...and although it is being identified as an application, when I click on it, it does nothing.

I would have thought that it was a problem with a particular program but I have now tried a few different programs..all were the same way.
This makes me think that I am looking at some new setup. I just do not have the slightest clue what..or even what to research.

OK..when you are done laughing at me, any ideas at what I am looking at?

An NZB can be for a single rar or an entire archive. You may need to group several search results together to obtain the NZB for the full archive. It would help if we knew which NZB search engine you were using?

Are you sure you got everything and not just one part? Try getting it from an nzb site if you made your own from a search engine. http://www.merlins-portal.net/Vbulletin/nzblist.php

From the way i read your post it looks like your just downloading the nzb file and trying to open that on its own.
Open the nzb you got from the website in your newsreader of choice (I recommend grabit, but theres a few options out there) and it will start downloading from usenet. Once its all finished and repaired if necessary (with par2 files that are downloaded with the file) you can use it like a normal file download (either run/view or unrar).

I do not think that I am trying to open an NZB or opening a partial file.

If there were supposed to be multiple rar files, the single one would not open on its own.

And I tried getting the NZB a couple of ways.
The last attempt was to go to alt-bin and do a search of the program I was looking for.
I saw the filename and then did a search for that at Binsearch. I created the NZB there and loaded it into Newsbin.
Newsbin downloaded the rar and I opened it.
And..like I said..it reads as an app but does nothing when I doubleclick it.
I am missing one..or multiple somethings..I just do not know what.

I can post the search results at alt-bin ..if that will help.
I just did not want to violate any rules by posting program specifics.

And did you tick all the boxes relating to that particular search result before creating the NZB or was there only one?

There was only one box .
I know to click all if they are there.

Also..alt-bin also listed the file size as 14.5mb.
BUT..like I said..they said it is the total file.
So I was thnking it might also be possible that it is a smaller file...to get the larger file...but...double clicking did nothing.

Never, ever do that!
If the file was much smaller than you would expect it is most likely a fake or even spyware.

I guess I do need to be more careful on the spyware...but I am still not getting what I am missing here

I wasn't very impressed with Binsearch. Try looking for what you want here:

http://newzleech.com/

If that fails you may need to try BitTorrent or eMule.

Sounds to me like the file you are downloading is supposed to be a split rar archive since you indicated the one you have is 14.5 MB, which is pretty much a "scene" standard. You indicated you were able to unrar it and that does seem odd, but then again winrar has an option to keep broken files which may be enabled by default in your settings.

Ya, I would agree with olephart, 14.5MB sounds exactly like a single part...either the nzb didn't contain the rest of it, or the rest of it wasn't tagged. I tried to use binsearch as well, but I found newzleech to be a bit more organized.
