MPAA Files injunction against Newzbin

Despite this, in the last week, we received notice that the MPA have filed for an injunction against us. We are thus now going through the motions of filling out paperwork etc and will see what happens next. There's not much else to tell you at this stage; we'll keep you posted.

Not much info yet, but it would appear that Newzbin has had to take down some NZB's after coming under pressure, although it will be fighting the lawsuit which has been looming over them recently.
They will have a larger warchest than practically all of the MPAA's previous targeted websites and has a pretty good case. It seems to revolve not around the content on usenet or the nzb's themselves, but the 'reports' that editors create with details of the files.
Despite taking down reports of some movies the files are still accessible by searching the raw usenet feed which isnt as simple as the normal search but covers far more files.

Since not many people have newzbin accounts but it could have a very big impact on the usenet community i'll post any more news as it comes up.

EDIT: A brief comment posted by the lawyer representing Newzbin (note that newzbin is based in the UK, not US):
Essentially what is happening is that the movie companies are asserting that the provision of NZB files amounts to Newzbin aiding copyright infringement because these NZB files have not been removed when Newzbin have been alerted to their infringing nature; in fact Newzbin suspended them straight away. They seek an injunction preventing such conduct under the provision s97a of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1998.

Naturally Newzbin denies this and intends to fight hard. The decision to suspend, and keep suspended, these NZBs was made on my advice.

This is not the point anymore. It does no good to keep hiding and sticking heads in the sand. This is it, we are going to court, the papers have been served and it will go ahead whether or not we start banning people who might be responsible.

And it's a GOOD thing - finally we find out decisively once and for all whether we can carry on doing this. That's good, isn't it?

Good to see that finally someone has the balls to stand up to the MPA and their endless saber rattling. They know they can't take down usenet so they see this as their next step or fallback plan or whatever. I'm so tired of these asshats just making this crap up as they go along.
