Pay by the gig?

Postby NoArmsJames » Tue Aug 12, 2008 4:31 pm

Are there any providers where I can pay for gigs without it being a monthly recurring? Everywhere I look it's X/gigs or 30 days, whichever comes first. I'm not that heavy a downloader and if I could spend $20-$30 for a nice block of gigs that would probably last me a few months.

I'm on a fixed social security income and even the $15/month I'm paying now is killing me.

Well, it would depend on where you are - US, Canada, UK, Egypt?

The more desccriptive of your location the better chance somebody may know, you don't need to spout off cities or towns, but counties, states, provinces would be sufficient...

Awesome! Astraweb has just what I need! 110 gigs for $25 with headers not counted.

Thank you!

Silly me, I was thinking for internet service...not for usenet, sorry. Location then really wouldn't matter.

Glad you found what you needed.

I think it kind of depends on your downloading habits. I think you should at first spend $15 for one of the unlimited hosting providers and then see how much you download and if so move to a lesser plan the next month.

Here's a German provider of block accounts:

http://www.usenet-sonderposten.de/

10 GB Blockaccount
inklusive SSL und ohne Downloadvolumenverfall
Preis: 2,95€

25 GB Blockaccount
inklusive SSL und ohne Downloadvolumenverfall
Preis: 4,95€

50 GB Blockaccount
inklusive SSL und ohne Downloadvolumenverfall
Preis: 7,95€

100 GB Blockaccount
inklusive SSL und ohne Downloadvolumenverfall
Preis: 13,95€

150 GB Blockaccount
inklusive SSL und ohne Downloadvolumenverfall
Preis: 19,95€

300 GB Blockaccount
inklusive SSL und ohne Downloadvolumenverfall
Preis: 35,95€

Excellent prices, SSL, claimed 120+ day retention (though apparently it's actually much longer than claimed), and 24/7 tech support (presumably in German?)

I never used them (and I don't speak German) but they offer a promising alternative to Astraweb and Usenet-News as a low-cost blockaccount provider. I remember when people were signing up for Hitnews when the site was Dutch-language-only, so if the language issue is not a problem ...

Thats not pay-per-gig, thats the more normal pay monthly option.

Of course the thread starter asked for a pay per gig account, but I posted a cheap server that gives a year of unlimited for $29 US, and 2 years for $52. That seems as cheap as pay per gig and takes into account deciding to download more as you become more experienced with Usenet or get a high def TV for example.
