Looking for a Binary Usenet Poster for Linux

Postby chrome307 » Mon Aug 27, 2007 9:00 am

Hi there

I'm a new member of this forum and joined up following the great tutorials I found regarding UseNet.

I use Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 as my OS and use the following programs:

KLibido - Binary Newsgrabber
PyPar2 - PAR recovery/creation

What I am missing out on is a binary poster similar to Yenc Power Post A&A 11b

In my desperation I have attempted to use this Windows application under WINE but it doesn't work and fails to load.

I guess that most members are Windows users, but if by chance a Linux user is onboard  and knows of any native applications (tried PAN already) that they would recommend OR a Windows app that would work in WINE, can you let me know?

Thanks for taking to read this :D

@ Nicewater

This is meant to work in PAN Newsreader but there is a lack of support for this :(

It is possible to use yenc powerpost in wine. It works very well so that's your best option if you can get it going.
All the native linux posters are old & buggy.

http://powerpost.cjb.net/
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVe ... ngId=13291

What would be best is someone doing a linux port of powerpost, the source is available at the website.
Unfortunately noone has taken it up yet.

I do have a converted RPM to DEB for KNewspost ............ it installs OK and appears to be working but I keep on getting
Error 408 Authorisation ( response from my NNTP) - no an issue with Windows tho'

I've added the KNewspost DEB installer to the above group :

a.b.warez.linux

or you can grab it here:

Code: Select all

It's a KDE application - if you have better luck let me know :)

Before you give up try different versions of wine. I remember the newer versions not working.

Try this one: http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/otherosfs/wine
If you're not running edgy it's ok, just grab the deb

You need to add 2 files from windows/system32 to the wine system32 dir: mfc42.dll and msvcrt.dll
Once you've got it up it runs like a charm.

OK

I've installed the older DEB for WINE .... the update manager wants me to upgrade it already.

I do have the two files you suggested I copy from Windows/System32

I'm stuck trying to find the Wine/System32 folder to try and move these files into there :(

So far I just get it attempting to load and it just hangs on my desktop eg

Just to let you know I've managed to get it working following your instructions, but haven't posted anything yet.

The only minor concern is that I keep getting 'update' messages for WINE .... is there anyway I can turn this off, or am I safe to update now??

BTW I'm using Feisty Fawn

I'm glad you managed to get it going =)

When I last used powerpost with wine the latest release didn't work. I don't know whether they've fixed it yet. I tried multiple versions, they were either buggy or didn't work. The edgy version (0.9.22) worked best.

Try the new version and see. You can always uninstall and go back.

Tested it yesterday and it allowed me to post again !!!

Using the older version of WINE has disabled the use of WinRAR but that's about it. I can always use Archive Manager to extract (slower than WinRAR but does the job).

I don't think I will update just yet as I was using this build before - it's more important to me to be able to upload.

Thanks again

Not to worry, found out that in the Synaptic Package Manager you can 'Lock' WINE so now I don't get the annoying pop-ups reminding me to update WINE to the latest build.

I tried Ypost. It works fine. It does require learning some but once you have your configuration file ready it becomes quite easy. It supports multi part posting. Haven't tried crossposting.

I know this is an old thread but I was looking around for a binary poster.

Check out this forum post I found, downloading "winetricks" using wget even lets powerpost work on the latest version of wine (currently 1.01 on ubuntu intrepid)

Try this......

It's based in Java, so you should be able to use it cross-platform. It supports SSL uploading too - kinda why I use it.

http://www.jbinup.com/en/

I use it in XP, and so far it works fine. I think the interface is initially in German, but you can change it to English easily.

I said it on another thread...but I use Forte Agent on WINE using UBUNTU (Hardy). Combine it with STUNNEL4 and you can have SSL encryption. Works like a charm.
