Alleged ‘copyright troll’ claims unnamed San Antonians are stealing porn movies

Postby MrFredPFL » Fri Jul 19, 2019 11:57 pm

Story :

A company that produces pornographic movies has filed dozens of lawsuits in San Antonio alleging its films were illegally downloaded from BitTorrent, a peer-to-peer file sharing system.

Los Angeles area-based Malibu Media LLC filed each San Antonio suit with the defendant as John Doe, informing judges that the company has yet to identify by name the actual person or persons who allegedly downloaded the content without paying.

The company, along with a sister adult film outlet Strike 3 Holdings, are widely considered the most active copyright litigants in the United States. Malibu Media is known for its “X-Art” brand, while Strike 3 has been referred to in the news as “the Steven Spielberg of porn.” Malibu and Strike 3 have gone after thousands of targets, many who have eventually paid an undisclosed amount in cash settlements.

While enjoying some success, Malibu Media and Strike 3 have also faced some backlash. Judges have referred to the companies as copyright trolls and are increasingly resisting the firms’ request for help to unmask the identities of alleged pirates of their movies. The jurists are denying subpoenas to be issued to internet service providers to reveal the companies’ targets.
