Davenport Lyons letter regarding 'Call of Juarez'

I've just had a letter asking for £593 within 14 days. I really cant remember downloading this game, how can I possibly prove my innocence? Should I just ignore the letters? or reply denying the allegations? Has anyone actually been taken to court thats replied to their letters? Also I read that the company they use (Logistep) has been stopped from monitoring Internet users because of privacy? Let me know what I should do as I really dont wanna pay, but cant be bothered with all the hassle. Thanks

ignore it and see what happens.

it probably is a fake, phishing scam.

If you got a scanner upload the image (edit out all the sensitive info in photoshop first!) and see if anyone can tell you if its real or a phishing scam.
Make sure you ask everyone who may have used the network if they downloaded it, or if your using wireless make sure it was encrypted well.
You shouldnt have to pay in the end, they will usually jsut let it go if you fight back because they know it isnt worth taking it to court.

It's not strictly speaking a scam, though it is immoral and basically extortion. For more info, see the other threads on Slyck regarding other Davenport Lyons rackets, namely 3D Pinball and Colin McRae Dirt:

http://www.slyck.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=31051

Both will give you handy pointers as to what to do next.

Good luck.

It might be a good idea if this does not become another thread in addition to the other two already here as they all deal with the same subject DL, maybe it might even be a good idea to create a new thread just for the DL issue, irrespective if you are new to DL or not.

They are trying to get almost 600 pounds out of me and saying i shared call of Juarez 3 times. i am guilty of downloading it but i do not share also, the person who's name is on the isp is not.

also

http://www.coj-game.com/

the game is now free, what kind of legal footing do these guys have?

if this went to court and the person who's responsible for the isp had no representation would they get fined 600 or less.

Thank You

have you read the two other LONG threads about davenport-lyons cited above by azitler? i think it's safe to say that there is no difference whatsoever between the situation you find yourself in for the call of juarez, and the situation others find themselves in for pinball or dirt. any and all of the discussion in the other 2 threads are entirely relevant, and applicable to your situation, in my opinion.
