not that impressive seeing as how I could get slammed by catagory 4 or 5 hurricane tomorrow. but it does make me question if our grid could handle the surge of energy a hurricane would produce if we put these turbines offshore.

Wow! :o

Wouldn't ya think that something designed to harness the power of the wind would be built to withstand strong winds!?

And why do people call them windmills!?? .... There is no 'milling' involved whatsoever! ... It's a wind turbine!

industrial wind turbines have brakes. so good chance they will survive a hurricane.
in the video's comments. it said the brakes had failed on this one.

What wind turbine are designed to do in strong winds is to auto-feather.
The blades turn as to face the wind head on and then a big disk brake locks the shaft to make sure
it does not spin.. in the case of this turbine the auto-feather system failed so no amount of brake could stop the blades. As the wind pressure got higher and higher the blades flexed backwards until they hit the tower.

yep. the unit needs to be able to rotate, and it needs to be able to pivot freely to keep proper orientation to the wind. they just disengage the shaft to the turbines.

it's the same principle used in ships with sails in a bad storm. you put up a minimum of sail to keep yourself running away from the storm, and try to ride it out. to take down all sails and drop anchor is death.

What's in the video is not a windmill but a wind turbine. Windmills are what they have in Holland and on miniature golf courses.
