ty for the youtube of it, i was hoping there was one... i had only seen the pic,

the dude, and his coach have gotten banned for this, it looks like to according to this article

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/O/ ... TE?SITE=AP

BEIJING (AP) -- A Cuban taekwondo athlete and his coach were banned for life after Angel Matos kicked the referee in the face following his bronze-medal match disqualification.

Cuban coach Leudis Gonzalez offered no apology for Matos' actions during the men's over-80 kg (176 pounds) match.

Matos was winning 3-2, with 1:02 in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan's Arman Chilmanov. He was sitting there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.

Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked referee Chakir Chelbat of Sweden. Matos then spat on the floor and was escorted out.

"He was too strict," Gonzalez said, referring to the decision to disqualify Matos. Afterward, he charged the match was fixed, accusing the Kazakhs of offering him money.

"This is a strong violation of the spirit of taekwondo and the Olympic Games. The sanctions are the following and are effective immediately: Lifetime ban of the coach and athlete in all championships sanctioned by the (World Taekwondo Federation) and at the same time, all records of this athlete at the Beijing Games will immediately be erased," said the announcer, reading a WTF release.

In his first match, Matos defeated Italy's Leonardo Basile, then beat China's Liu Xiaobo 2-1 in the quarterfinals. But he lost to South Korean Cha Dong-min in the semis to land in the bronze-medal match.

"To me it was obvious he was unable to continue," Chilmanov said. "His toe on his left foot was broken."

Matos won the gold medal in this division at the 2000 Sydney Games, dedicating the victory to his mother, who died on the day of the opening ceremony. At the 2004 Athens Games, he finished 11th.

Matos' tantrum followed a day of confusion on the mats.

Earlier Saturday, China's double gold medalist Chen Zhong crashed out in the quarterfinals after initially being declared the winner. It was the first time a match result had been overturned since taekwondo became an official Olympic sport in 1990.

I dunno, but doesn't it seem that alot more people are forgetting what the olympics are about? More and more poor sportsmanship is making it's way in...

Didn't a Greco Roman wrestler drop his bronze-medal and walked off during the winners announcements?

Then again, there seems to be a lot of leeway with the rules this year. Like allowing the 14 year old to compete.

Yes, I heard of the guy who dropped his medal and walked out...

Then you also hear of the little girl who was 'too ugly' to be on camera?

Distasteful all the way around. Ruining the traditions of the Olympics, soon people aren't gonna want to watch it anymore.

The article here says that the judges felt that the athlete was in the right for dropping the medal though I still call him a cry-baby for acting so immature.

So they say he was penalized..but doesn't really say for what...and if they were actually wrong, just that he had a reason to be pissed.

the point is that he was pissed, not so much about the specific penalty, but about the lack of an immediate appeals process in his sport, which the folks in charge agree is wrong, and needs to be fixed.

But in the end, he only wanted CAS to verify that the lack of an immediate appeals process is a loophole that needs to be fixed. It also was referred to as a violation of “the Olympic Charter and FILA’s own rules about fair play.”

Judges said Abrahamian was right.

“We limit ourselves to ruling that FILA must, consistently with the (Olympic) Charter and general principles of fairness, establish for the future a jury of appeal to determine the validity or otherwise of complaints of the kind ventilated by (Abrahamian),” the judges wrote.

Elsewhere in the 20-page ruling, judges noted several times that FILA did not appear at a hearing.

to put it another way: the judges feel that particular sport's governing body has its head up its ass.

I can see the denial of an appeal would be upsetting...

But to appeal a decision on a penalty like punching a dude in the junk or something, doesn't really deserve one...I guess, there always should be a way to take a second look at the decisions.

yes. the absolute lack of the ability to review an event is bizarre. in the men's 200 meter final, not one but two runners were disqualified when replays clearly showed both of them stepped on the lane lines (repeatedly, no less), which is expressly forbidden. those guys WOULD have won silver and bronze had there not been a process to appeal. as it was, they were both disqualified, and two runners who did not break the rules won medals instead. imagine how those guys would have felt if track and field had the same "tough shit, it's over now" attitude.

i have no idea what the particular incident was that brought this sport's lack of appeals process into focus - but i agree with him 100% that there needs to be a mechanism in place review things. certainly, there should be rules about what can be reviewed and what can't - but no review whatsoever, of anything?

Way too much pressure put on athletes in the olympics it seems... All these things happening, rules being bent. I won't say too much..after all..Canada had a runner in the 100m that was awesome...but drugged up :)

The taekwando judges were about as biased as you can get when it came to anybody against the Chinese. Shame since those who do win may well deserve it, but everyone will just say they won because of bias.
We need to get rid of judges in Olympics. That means boxing, diving, gay-ass horse events. It shouldn't be subjective, always creates controversy. As for the Horse Dressage bullshit, since when is telling a horse to dance a fucking athletic sport? About as deserving of being an Olympic event as nascar.

I would have done the same thing. fuck what people think about his sportsmanship. he did the right thing. But good thing it wasn't a Chinese athlete.. oh god, can you imagine what they would have done to him?
