ONLINE FILESHARING outfit eDonkey has been forced to close and pay $30 million to the recording industry for ever existing.

MetaMachine, which owned eDonkey, was one of seven outfits to receive shut down letters by the Recording Industry Association of America. BearShare, i2Hub, WinMX, and Grokster have reached similar agreements. Warez P2P, Limewire and Soulseek have not made any agreement yet.

A spokesRIAA described the eDonkey closure as another domino falling, although that is usually seen as a bad thing, so we think he might have got a bit mixed up.

Under the agreement MetaMachine agreed to immediately cease distributing eDonkey, eDonkey 2000, and Overnet. It has also said that it will take steps to stop punters using previously downloaded versions of the eDonkey software.

The eDonkey Web site has a sign up saying that the eDonkey2000 Network was no longer available. It also has the RIAA’s requested mantra that people who steal music or movies are breaking the law.

Perhaps some time eDonkey will be banned from eDonkey servers - which irony. I don't know if this will happen, but they already block old eMule versions.

And Overnet - they seem to do hard work to Spam the network with fake results - at least for content they are concerned about. I don't know how they do it, but for every search attempt you get ~100 new Fake results with 255 sources. Perhaps Overnet is already flooded by bots or is there a weakness in Overnet?

I guess the home page of eDonkey is hard coded, is there another way to block it than changing the hosts file? Like just removing the home tab? :p

One thing is for sure - by simply shutting down MetaMachine and their site, eMule can't be stopped. Flooding Overnet doesn't help neither. We know that eDonkey is not a 'so-called filesharing site' but a (decentral) system with a community behind.
