At the risk of being shot by the ed2k club, just don't use it. There are other clients that will take your unfinished files and finish them...and give you faithful crap free service for years to come...

...it may or may not be called eMule....maybe.

This was one of the results of MetaMachine being shut down by the Copyright Industry. since the site was so well connected to the client, the copyright industry essentially are shutting your client down through the creators.

Some users would rather use an older version.

You might want to check out SlyckTom's article on what happened to MetaMachine (makers of the eDonkey2000 client) so you know what happened.

Any other clients other than emule or emule mods. I have emule but never like it. what abt edonkey Lite?

Or which older ver. of edonkey would be safe to use. I thought 1.4.3b was safe.

I'm not sure which version would be safe according to the eDonkey2000 community (which, I'm sure is in touch with this forum from time to time) but some users are arguing none are safe. The idea was that 1.4.3b was the version befor the RIAA started attacking MetaMachine, so using that would avoid the dramatic self-deinstallation thing that's going on right now. If you really intend on using the eDonkey2000 client, try using an older version. Might be an idea to test versions one version older at a time until you get one that works.

Unfortunately, I will probably never be familiar with the eDonkey2000 client because I've only ever knew eMule myself. I'm a little surprised SharedHolder and OvernetUser havn't posted some suggestions yet since they're both avid eDonkey2000 users. It might be some sort of bug in the software or something. If it's just a bug in the software, the only way you can go about it is try and fix it because MetaMachine is dead and can't fix it at this point thanks to the US courts.

eDonkey lite is also a hack of a copyrighted software and posting any links publically would technically be a violation of forum rules since it's technically a "crack"

Wish I could help you more, but I'm an eMule user, not an eDonkey2000 user.

The most annoying thing about the downfall of MetaMachine was the way they sold out. There was NEVER a security risk in the client - it is obvious now that they were putting the backdoor in the post-1.4.3b at the request of the **AA, and needed as many people as possible to 'upgrade' so that the shutdown could take place. It also seems that they shut out the official forum at that time and blamed 'server died' so that we couldn't tell anyone what was going on.

Ver1.4.3 will work, but you have to stop it connecting to the eD homepage first. Put the following in your hosts file (usually found at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\)
Code: Select all
127.0.0.1   home.edonkey.com
127.0.0.1   install.overnet.com
127.0.0.1   http://bundles.overnet.com
127.0.0.1   http://www.ucmore.com

You will probably have trouble connecting to Overnet, and it seems there are very few clients actually connecting to this network now anyway. Trying to download a contact.dat file through the client is unlikely to work.

As for eDonkey Lite, some people will tell you it's safe to use it, but there are a number of different versions floating around, and some have been known to drop various nasties/trojans.

Personally I always found eDonkey to work better than emule, but it is a known fact that the eD hybrid and the mule didn't play too well together. As long as we had a good number of hybrids online, however, this didn't matter as much. Now though, as less people are using ther eD client, I would suggest making the move to eMule and torrents.

Edit: All this aside, you could be suffering a corrupt .met file.
Move all your downloads out, and put them back a couple at a time until you find one that might be crashing the client. Then you can either run MetFileRegenerator on the corrupt one, or try getting a different version of it.

- You are downloading a corrupted file.

1. Fist make a backup of your eDonkey temp folder.
2. Delete the files from your eDonkey temp folder one by one to see which one is corrupted than close and restart eDonkey every time you doing that.

- Your eDonkey is affected by the ES3 (eDonkey Settles for $30 Million) syndrome so just try to read with attention what NocturnalVagabond wrote.

I tried to run the 1.4.3b version of the donkey client, but honestly, it never worked properly, or maybe I didn't install it properly. I kept searching for a solution to my donkey problem, until someone in this forum, I don't remember the thread, claimed he was using a lite version of the edonkey and everything was fine at last. I downloaded a lite version of it, tried it, and so far, has worked just fine for me. it is true, there are less ed2k users, but according to my stats, there are several servers, including donkey servers, with an important number of users (over a million each) and files (from 1.2 to 2 million files each) so, as long as the donkey does the job for you, I think it is worth to give it a try (i'm not an english native speaker, so I apologize if my words do not express my ideas clearly enough).

some of us use eDonkey2000 versions 1.4.5 and 1.4.6
NocturnalVagabond's post has the right idea but you need to add another entry to the windows HOSTS file so then you can use any edonkey/overnet versions old to new. so edit Hosts with notepad
[c:\windows\system32\drivers\ect\hosts]

127.0.0.1 sda.edonkey.com #stops forced uninstall
127.0.0.1 home.edonkey.com #stop homepage warning
127.0.0.1 install.overnet.com #stop spyware
127.0.0.1 http://bundles.overnet.com #stop spyware
127.0.0.1 http://www.ucmore.com #stop spyware

##overnet only -for older overnet 0.53
127.0.0.1 home.overnet.com #stop homepage warning

the ones that say #stop spyware, are not needed anymore since edonkey have shut down, but you may as well add them just incase.
these entries have been working flawless for me since the day metamachine shut down, non of the pull out you broadband connection like some of the forums say
this is a more permanent solution for now anyways.

if you have problems saving the host file or even opening it, you may need to disable antivirus and antispyware applications, cos some of them protect the Hosts file, also check if its set to read only, right click hosts /propertys and untick the read-only, as this can stop you saving it once youve edited it.

I would strongly advise against using any version after 1.4.3b - we have no idea what other backdoors they put in the client.

Thx for all ur help. :D

I was using edonkey 1.4.3b when the problem occurred. I had uninstalled it and installed 2 diff. versions of edonkey lite. Both didn't work properly. I have now added all the reqd. entries to my host file. I had earlier patch my host file with the edonkey patch released abt 12 days back. Anyway, I am now going to reinstall edonkey 1.4.3b and let u know if everything is all right. I also use azureus but need edonkey for those rare and old files. :D

I reinstalled edonkey 1.4.3b but moved only one-third of my files to the temp directory and it has not given me any problems since. Also, I maxed out my connection speed in just 2-3 minutes.

Btw, where should I update my server.met file from?

I did not get to the forum for the account that I had a job interview but I am here now. I hope this helps and it may have already been covered by another poster in this thread already. If not, well here it is.

Technically only edonkey.com has closed, so all the edonkey downloads, updates and development are over...but not eDonkey2000. Just follow this simple guide, posted by an Italian forum:

1. Download 1.4.3b or previous versions, new versions are NOT recommended.

2. To get rid of the default homepage of edonkey (with the riaa announcement, made just to scare you. They are legal actions they can put on you for viewing the webiste) close Explorer and eDonkey and go to: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\, you'll find a file named HOSTS, open it with notepad and add the following code:

Code:
# eDonkey home - http://alltheweb.com/
66.94.229.254 home.edonkey.com
# # eDonkey home - http://alltheweb.com/

3. When eDonkey is restarted, you wont see anymore the RIAA message but a random homepage.

4. To connect properly to Overnet, you need the file contact.dat. This should be downloaded from the official website, but it's no longer possible.. Use this link to download the new contact.dat:
http://www.p2pforum.it/forum/attachment ... 1158393344

Replace it with the existing one..

Bad Luck, now my edonkey completely refuses to run. Whenever I start it, I get a message

"edonkey2000.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

And when I click on the error report, In the error signature I get:

"AppName: edonkey2000.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: msvcrt.dll ModVer: 7.0.2600.2180 Offset: 00037fd4"

I uninstalled and then reinstalled edonkey 1.4.3b, installed edonkey 1.3 too but to no avail. Even tried 2 versions of edonkey lite but the same problem shows up. I am always offline when I reinstalled edonkey. Any suggestions.?

To accept the demise of the client; to move on.

Even if you did the cleanest possible reinstall (like by e.g. formatting your drive first), how long would it take before something goes wrong again?

I don't know what the problem is. Maybe bad crumbs? Try moving your crums somewhere else and start with new crumbs. My client works fine but I do remember that I had this problem for a while. I just moved my crumbs and then I uninstalled and reinstalled with a better version (older) and it worked fine.

If the donkey doesn't work for you, try out eMule ;)

Well, I took out all my files from my temp directory yet edonkey still won't start. n the meantime, I have switched over to emule. It does the job but I find it 25-30% slower than edonkey on an average. I would like to get back to edonkey again.

eMule can take a little time to get going but when it does it keeps going. Just be patient you'll get what you want.

well what if the person only has a shared time frame on the net like 3 hrs per day. He can't be waiting 5+ hours to get good speeds now can he? Thats why there's the donkey and it lives regardless if the programmers throw in the towel.......

3 hours online a day is almost nothing. In that case torrents or newsgroups are the only viable ways to get any P2P done at all, and you shouldn't be on the Edonkey network to begin with.
